Show Page 6 - Mount Timpanogos Temple Special Edition Special technique used to create art glass for temple By Gordon Huether I he irt glass technique used lor thi' Mt. 'Timpanogos leniplc is called INNl K-I.ITi:, .1 patented technique devcl-' oped by AriliiU-tliir.il Gl.iss I X-sij;n Inc. The basic premise is th.it multiple panes of tempered tem-pered glass have etching on tin- surfaces tli.it .in- aligned with one .mother .iiul with the laminated specialty glasses. . One of the i:o.ils..in dcsienint: this win dow w.is to meet the challenge : ol creating a window that reads as a single window from the exterior and acts independently indepen-dently as two windows from the interior. The window on the main floor and upper floor act independently inde-pendently on the interior, whole and complete compositions composi-tions in their own right. During the day from the exterior of the building the window will read as one continuous con-tinuous window, fully integrated inte-grated into the architecture and simultaneously making a powerful visual statement. Although I hesitate to assign specific meaning to the design elements of this window win-dow since it is important th.it each individual interprets art in his or her own way, I would like to offer my. own interpretation.. interpre-tation.. The circular form at the fop of the window (a mouth blown rondel) is a powerful formimage that acts as the center focus of the : window, symbolizing the source of lite, eternity, and the C reator's power and light. Irom this source flows dod's power, light, love and wisdom. I his (low is expressed in the lorm of water transcribed In glass. I he glass sparkles, is dynamic and full ot hie and movemi" . As this Mow reaches the bottom it is transformed into- ordered forms, metaphorically speak ing to Cod's attempt at breaking break-ing his wonders, mystery and wisdom into bits of information informa-tion that man can begin to understand and use in his life's journey. ' The horizontal forms running run-ning vertically up either side of the water give man the means to ascend to be present with our creator. Like ladders of light that lead to the keystone, key-stone, they are the vehicle for the transcendence to God. Just as the ordinances and ceremonies of the Temple are , simple, beautiful and sacred, I believe we have created in our art glass something that speaks this same language. The windows are grounded in traditional forms and compositions. com-positions. Visionary in their manipulation of these forms .and compositions, and partic-. ularly in the 'quality of light ' transmitted through the glass.. Symbolically, the. concepts f priesthood, seals and keys are incorporated in these designs, traditional reference is made not only in design content con-tent but by the use of rondels. Kondels have been used in leaded glass for over 800 years. The rondel is about four inches thick at the center. The "water" was achieved by laminating hundreds of faceted ."54" clear glass to the inside surface pieces of dichroic glass were also laminated lami-nated to add more sparkle both to the interior and exteri-. or of the window. The keystone key-stone is made of dichronizcd German mouth blown glass especially made for this project. pro-ject. Dichroic glass is highly reflective and shifts color depending on the direction of light. It also changes .color depending on whether light is being transmitted or reflected. The glass used in the ladder is called "ripple"glass and is a "rolled" glass made in the United States. ' In the rest of the windows the primary materials are the blown dichroic gl.iss and blown rondels. Over 150 sheets of dichroic glass were used and over 1,500 rondels were made for this project. We opted . for blown :. rondels (although much more expensive) expen-sive) as opposed to pressed rondels because of the quality of light that thick blown rondels ron-dels offer. Fach rondel is unique. The process also included ' etching the glass on two layers (on window D elayers) in corresponding cor-responding patterns this took : hundreds of hours at the computer com-puter and many more hours in the studio. The pniject took approximately 14 months for eight people to complete. This included design,, mock-ups, fabrication and project man-. man-. agement. This project would not have been possible without the vision, faith and courage of Allen Hrekson, Keith Stepan and Lawrence Wyss. It was truly a remarkable collaboration collabora-tion and was a real privilege to work with these men and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
