Glen, Union C Oregon, contains a large number of colonists colo-nists from our city, and all seem to be in a happy, thriving condition. con-dition. Mrs Lutlla Johnson, of Mt. Glen, reports "everything just lovely" at her new home in the "Glen". For the last two weeks visiting among relatives and friends has been a' joyful pastime. The primary object of her visit was to represent the Union Stake at the Primar' Conference in Salt Lake Cily. Mt. Glen contains about 95 souls, presided over by "Eddie" Whiting, with Lafayette John-f John-f on and Edward Killpack associated associ-ated as counselors. . - , , Mt. Gleiiis beautifully situated situat-ed and surrounded with many natural objects of beauty. The soil is suitable for all kinds of agricultural and horticultural pursuits and stockraising. The climate is not rigorous, and the rainfall is nearly sufficient to lr.ature the crops. The colonists own largely in the stock of the sugar factory, and also in a saw mill that can cut 100,000 feet of lumber per day. There is a generous sprinkling of Perrys, Johnson?, Whitings and Gleggs, iu the new colony, descendants of the founders of our City, and all manifest a perfect contentment content-ment with their new homes and pleasant future prospects. Bp Whiting takes great interest in his "ward" and especially in the young members thereoff, by encouraging en-couraging them in all noble and honorable pursuits. lie gives prizes for the best specimens o handiwork, in mechanics, agri culture, horticulture and floriculture flori-culture His example and en c uragement is having a mark ed effect upon the young, which is already bearing good fruit. In Hemcriam. Last Sunday, as well as being Flag Day, was the day selected by the K. O. T. M. for the M -morial day of the order, and which is observed wherever a '"Tent" is organized. At 10 a. in. fifty Knights were in line, as well as fifteen Ladies of the L. O. T. M., in front of their hall, loaded with the choicest floral emblems, and led by the band of the rder, marched ' to the City Cemetery where memorial service ser-vice for the dead was read by Past Commanders Win Kearns and D. C. Johnson; Lieut. Coin minder A Gus John oi and R. K. Elliot N. Jordan. Com. Jno. Anderson acted us Grand Mar shall. " The er"H of Frank Houtz was covered with a wealth of bloom by tho friends of his ifetime, when the company, seated in vehicles, departed to the Evergreen Ceuimur , accom panied- by a large number of friends. There the ritual was read by the officers above named and the tombs of W. B. Dougall, John Glea'son and Wm. Marby were wreathed with flowers In concluiion, Sir Knight T. R. Kelly sounded "Taps" and the ceremonies ended. In the mean time, the grave of the only lady Maccabee, at rest in the Evergieen, Mrs. Margeret Jamesi n, of Eureka, was remembered, remem-bered, with appropriate ceremonies, ceremo-nies, by the Lady Maccabees, Co nmander, Lydia M. Johnson officiating. There was a large train in atteudanee, aud all ap-p ap-p ared to enjoy the exercises. Mrs. Margeret Goff, Mother-in-law of Ether Blanchard, is now at his home, and may be seen any day, after 10 a. to., sitting sit-ting in the ingle-nook, in her easy chair, plying the knitting needles, stitch by stitch, as the sands of life glide slowly awa'. She was born in Deleware 93 years ago and has had a large and varied experience during her laborious life. Theold lady's faculties fac-ulties are alert and her memory good, as will be observed, when narrating interesting episodes in her life's history, that happened when our country was, yet, almost al-most a wilderness. What chan-ges chan-ges have been wrought since her birth! All the old methods of life aud travel have beeu left behindhand now seem so vefy long ago. At hr first awakening, awaken-ing, the idea of the telegraph and railroads was waking the minds of genius! To cross the continent was looked upon as little less than miraculous, al though Lewis and Clark had ac complished the perilous journey, which was regarded by the masses mas-ses at that day as near akin to that of Sin bad the Sailor. Gen. Jacason and his coterie of hard hitters were in their prime, and a few of the more hardy had broken through the Alleganies and looking with awe and admiration admi-ration upon the "dark continent" beyond which teemed with the red "children of God," and the ltsser denizens of the forest. The subject of our sketch moved mov-ed into Pennsylvania while very young, and from there went to Kirtland, Ohio, where she joined the L. D. S., in 1S35, and from thence followed its fortunes, "all Startling1 Efidenee Fresh testimony in great quuntity is constantly coming in, declaring Dr. King's New Discovery for Consumption Consump-tion Coughs and Colds to be unequal-' ed. A recent expression from T. J. McFarland Heritor ville," Va serves as example, lie writes: '"1 had bronchitis bronchi-tis for three years and doctored all the time without being benefited. Then 1 began taking Dr. King's New Discovery, and a few bottles wholly cured me." Equally effective in curing cur-ing all throat and lung troubles, consumption, con-sumption, pneumonia and grip. Mayhap, you never nev-er clasped the spokes of a wagon wheel, with your arms above, and -your feet locked below, sitting sit-ting astride the hub, and ride a block. Or for want of a litt'e cannon, did you borrow farmer Mower's two inch auger, and bore a hole into a two foot stump pour in a pound of powder, tamp it solid and then "let her go Galliger," on the Fourth of July some four decades ago? If you did engage in such pastimes, pas-times, and have forgotten it, or if you never did no matter, you you cannot pres'ribe the manner, man-ner, in which the average American, Ameri-can, western boy, shall celebrate the glorious Fourth Talk to such "kids" about the danger of firecrackers, gunpowder, fiYe-arjrtsx-toy pistols, toy cannons and an occasioned run a-way caused by such by-play! What matter to him if there were 2. 680 people injured last year with firecracker's, etc, he wasn't one of 'era, and if he had been, his V wounds would have been healed in a few-days, and all memories obliterated from his mind except the fact that he had, a "heck of good time," and this year' nothing noth-ing less than 75 sticks of giant powder will make noise euough to satisfy his patriotic ardor. Brother Ives, you live in Wisconsin, Wis-consin, and should have been one of the boys fifty years ago; or were you born in good old Mas3. where the decendants of the he, roes of Bunker Hill, Concord and Lexington, seem to desire to celebrate the Fourth, .only with singing, oratory and mild poetic effusion? V - As we old.boys grow older, wet naturally advocate a milder expression ex-pression of our patriotic sentiments, senti-ments, but young America will yet, for some generations, burn powder, and make all kinds of noisy demonstration in short it will be "Hurray! hurray!! -IhurraylH on our glorious lnd-. pendence Day!" bT Spend all your money in one place. CHICAGO celebration is not only dangerous, danger-ous, but unpatriotic and a little short of a burlesque on the spirit spir-it that should animate Ameri cans on that day. As to the "dangerous" part Brother George; did you ever, in exuberant boyhood, ride a wild two year old steer accross the pasture with a pack of barking bark-ing dogs at his heels; or seize the arms of the old water-wheel when in motion, and ride a few revolutions, while the spray fell, s das bed and roared? Perhaps y u never braced your ten year oldorpus in the "bull wheel" of a dismantled reaper and permit per-mit ed yourself to be rolled down a steep hill, without rudder or compass, that would make the ride of Hector around the walls Orders may be ; leit with H.
