After a fortnight, beaten down with terrors, Karl ran away and tramping up country secured a place on a farm. Arrived at manhood, and owner of a farm of his own, he was called one day to Black Earth, to learn that the man and woman he had met the day of his arrival had murdered his brother broth-er the day before and hidden the body in the cellar. World's Work. Why Gnats Dance. A correspondent notirg what is fairly fair-ly well known among entomologists, that mar.y species of flies congregate to dance,- says It is well known that tnia is for a very utilitarian purpose the selection of a mate. At the present pres-ent moment there are thousands of so-called "winter miCge" (trichocera hiemalis) dancing at the end of his garden, and every r.ow and again paired couples can be seen to separate sepa-rate themselves from the crowd. On the previous day, when it was very windy, there were but few about, but three or four found the shelter of a doorway, and after a lengthy dance, seen from a darkened room against a twilight sky, a paired couple found a resting place on his coat sleeve. The duke of Saxe-Weimar once Invited In-vited John Sebastian Bach to attend a dinner at the palace. Before the guests sat down to the feast Bach was asked to give an improvisation. The composer seated himself at the harpsichord harpsi-chord and straightway forgot all about dinner and everything else. He played play-ed so long that at last the duke touched touch-ed his shoulder and said: "We are very much obliged, master, but we must not let the soup get cold." Bach sprang to his feet and followed the duke to the dining room without uttering utter-ing a word. But he was scarcefly seated seat-ed when he sprang up, rushed back to the Instrument like one demented, struck a few chords and returned to the dining room, evidently feeling much better. "I beg pardon, your highness," he said, "but you interrupted inter-rupted me in a series of chords and arpeggios on the dominant seventh and I could not feel at ease until they were resolved into the tonic. It is as if you had snatched a glass of water from the lips of a man dying of thirst. Now I have drunk the glass out and am content." Type of Western Woman. Mrs. Alice B. Gossage of Rapid City, S. A STATE TO dE ENVIED. Grand Duchy of Finland Practically Without a National Debt. . In respect of its national debt, the Grand Duchy of Finland appears to be an enviable state. The idea is that the scholars should get the full benefit bene-fit of the sea air at a critical time in their development, and that by visits to all the principal seaboard countries of the world they should acquire useful use-ful knowledge of the manners and customs cus-toms of many peoples. The school course covers a period of four years, and the fees for this time work out at something like $5,000. Walking Tour of the World. In effect it was that for $20,000 Williams Wil-liams assured Dr. Rush he could get a receipt in full for the taxes,' amounting to $26,770.17. Dr. Rush protested against signing the check because "didn't want to get into any more entanglements" en-tanglements" about the taxes," remembering re-membering some trouble experienced two years before. It could be accomplished, accom-plished, the story ran, by paying the money to "Mr. Raymond, or his right-hand right-hand man, whoever that might be." The fair plaintiff, who is now in the East, alleges that she broke her theatrical theat-rical contracts and closed her stage career on the strength of promises of the defendant to buy her a handsome home in New York city and have his life heavily insured, making her the beneficiary in the policy. The basis of the suit is failure to do either of these things.. POSSIBILITY OF THE FUTURE. Electricity Likely to Develop Wondrous Won-drous Freight Service. Lon-don. But what has electrical science to say? The latest electric parcel railway rail-way sceme would cover the distance between Canada and Liverpool in fifteen fif-teen hours, so that only the laying of the tube on the floor of the ocean is wanted. EX-BANDIT JIM YOVNGER ENDS WASTED LIFE. Jim Younger, Quantrell raider, member mem-ber of Jesse James' gang, who, with his brothers, Cole and Bob Younger, was sentenced to life imprisonment in 1877 for the Northfield, Minn., bank raid and the murder of Cashier Hay-ward, Hay-ward, committed suicide last week in a room In the Reardon hotel at SL Paul, Minn. The dead man was found with a revolver clinched in his hight hand. He had used his left hand to steady the revolver when he held it to his temple. His clothes were neatly folded, fold-ed, and everything in the room showed he had made careful preparations to end his life. Younger was recently paroled after Jim Younger. " -serving twenty-five years of a life sentence sen-tence in the Stillwater penitentiary. The parole did not restore his full citizenship, citi-zenship, and stipulated he should nq,t leave the state. When Younger wished to marry recently Miss Alice Miller, who had nursed him when he was down with the wounds received in th Northfield gun fight, he found he oould not because he was legally dead The police found a package of let ters that had passed between Young er and the woman with whom he was in love. The woman reciprocated hi3 affection, and it was reported at one time that they were to be m.irried. Her relatives raised objections, and a further obstacle was the fact that it was pointed out that a paroled prisoner pris-oner could not legally contract a marriage. mar-riage. The couple determined to disregard the objections of relatives and an effort ef-fort was made to overcome the other obstacle to their marriage by securing from the state board of pardons a full pardon and restoration to citizenship. This effort failed, and this, it is thought, had much to do with Young-r's Young-r's determination to end his life. On July 10, 1901, Jim and Cole Younger were released from the state prison at Stillwater on parole. Bob died many years ago. After Jim's release re-lease from the penitentiary he was employed by a firm of tombstone cutters cut-ters of this city, and with Cole, who was in the employ of the same firm, AWce Miller, went through the state soliciting orders. or-ders. On one of these trips Jim was thrown from his wagon and hurt hiq head badly, aggravating an old wound he had received in the civil war. Ha left the firm in a few months and was clerk of a cigar stand in one of the largest grocery stores of St. Paul. It is said that relations between Jim and Cole Younger were much strained in fact, that the brothers had not been on speaking terms for the last six months. Cole Younger is confined to his bed with sickness. The quarrel was over money matters. PASTOR FORCED TO RESIGN. Rev. Bruce Brown of Denver Charged with "Sensationalism." Probably the most leisurely worker among dramatists of the day is Arthur W. Pinero. He confesses to taking a couple of years over a play, and some times longer. "Iris" was written and rewritten until very little of the original origi-nal remained. "The Gay Lord Quex" was copied out no fewer than twelve times, and 'THe Second Mis. I was in a terrible condition, and although I took quarts of medicine and was attended by doctors, I got no better, but worse. Friends spoke of my bad appearance, and thousands knew about it. I could hardly get around and felt and looked like a dead man rather than a living one. Doan's Kidney Fills, procured at the Logan Drug Co.'s store, were a blessing to me; half a box relieved me; three boxes ertirely cured me." The return re-turn of Clarence Mackay and the arrival ar-rival of' the steamer Silver Town with 3,000 miles of wire at San Francisco means active work. The cable to be laid is of English manufacture, writes the New York Post. The India rubber rub-ber covering was made in Philadelphia. Philadel-phia. No adequate facilities exist in the United States for the construction -5f a cable of the quality required. The weight of the copper wire will be 500 pounds per knot, as against 200 pounds in the old-fashioned cables. The method of laying it is ingenious, machinery being provided to give the proper bend to the cable and prevent it from paying out too fast. The tension ten-sion of the cable is carefully measured, meas-ured, and it is so laid that it does not kink or coil. The Star Arcturus. Arcturus, a star of the "solar type" of spectrum identical with that of the sun, is now visible in the early evening. Arcturus has changed its position with reference to the surrounding sur-rounding stars during the last S00 years by an amount equal to the apparent ap-parent diameter of the moon, moving mov-ing toward the southwest. This brilliant bril-liant orb can not be at less than eight or ten times the distance of Sirius about nine "light years" and is probably at a distance from us eyen greater than this. In that case, to shine as brilliantly as it does, its bulk must be fully that of a thousand suns. CITY OF BIG NUMBERS. New York a Place Where All Things Are On a Large Scale. For instance, he Bays: "For our daily newspaper reading read-ing our papers use from 450 to 1,000 tons of white paper a day, which in the average eight-page paper amount to from 8,000,000 to 20,000,000 copies. The various press associations cable us between 80,000 and 100,000 words a day. Our entertainments in our forty odd theaters cost us from $75,-000 $75,-000 to $100,000 a night. We sold on our stock exchange floor over 251,-000,000 251,-000,000 shares of stock during the last year, and while 1,000,000 shares a day is a large average, on May 9, 1901, the traffic amounted to 3,336,695 shares. And so it goes. We surely are justified justi-fied in declaring that New York is the city of big numbers, as well as big things." Guide Books Are Barred. A guide book is generally regarded as harmless. Not so in Turkey, as a German traveler has learned to his grief. Officials found in his trunk "a cuide through Turkey" and confiscated confiscat-ed iL The next morning the book was returned to the German, but with more than a hundred pages torn out. The traveler went to the censor's office to complain of this inexplicable treatment treat-ment of his book. But the censor explained ex-plained to him with irresistible logic that an accurate description of Constantinople Con-stantinople could not be suffered, since ;a knowledge of the locality was cal-culted cal-culted to facilitate an attempt on ti. sultan's life.'
