Mrs. Nation can't understand why George Washington should receive so much more praise for hh hatchet work than she does. How is it that so many news papers are printed in prisons? Surely the convicts there cannot have had any experience in the work. The wagon tongue says never a word, but it gets there ahead of the rest of the outfit. Il might be well for some people to make a note of this. The main difference between a camel and some of our citizen? is that the former can work eight days without drinking, and the latter can drink eight days without working. It is -that feeling which prompts a woman lo dig up the photograph photo-graph of a friend who is coining to visit from the bottom bureau drawer and put it ou the parlor mantel. We should like to lay a small wager on tho assertion that the Cuban delegates didn't get any statement from the President that they could put a hook into. Mac is a great old boy, but what he doesn't say would fill volumes. Of course, it is only a question of lime when the United States will have to fight for its commercial com-mercial and political supr imacy. It isn't natural to suppoelhat the rest of the world is going to submit to American domination without a Bt niggle. ' Some of the European papers are saying that there are only three absolute mon&rchs in the world, referring to the three European Kings. These papers are behind the times. The requiem of free silver was sounded in the Commoner the other day when Mr. Bryan said that "if" gold became plentiful enough to furnish all the money necessary, then' bimetallism would be unneces-sory. unneces-sory. "While the light holds out to burn, the 'vilest sinner may return." A Methodist minister, who is at the head of the committee pledged to honestly and care fully investigate the effect of the anti-canteen law, starts out by declaring that the investigation investiga-tion was undertaken to neutralize neutral-ize the effects of a conspiracy of whiskey men lo bring discredit dis-credit on the law. Yo (Jodsl This is fairness. An Oakland Fatality. That was a very sad fatality which took place at Oakland on the night of April 25, when the burning of a granery cost ten- year-old Frank Davis his life. According to Orson II. Mower, who was an eye-witness of the fire, some people in Springville are making- themselves very busy circulating stories of the affair which have neither facts or decency to support them, but which are adding greatly, to the already sufficiently keen anguish of the people most directly concerned. From the tale told us by Mr Mower, the lad was the son of Mrs. Rachel Crump of Silver City, who had secured a home for him with Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Phillips, at Oakland. The latter treated him as cordially as if he had been one of their own family. Being crowded for house room, they fitted up a granery near the house, making it a cosy and comfortable ste&p-L iilg apartment for the hoy. On the evening in question, after getting his lessons for the next day (he lad went to bed at about 9:30, Mrs. Phillips cautioning him about his candle, having noticed a little carelessness on his part in that regard. At nbout 11:30 nn explosion was heard, ai d Mr. Phillips saw the granery on fire. The explosion was due to the presence of a box of giant caps in a remote corner of the granery iof, The alarm was given, and 0. II. Mower and sons, Mrs. E. Z. Clark, Millie Anderson- and William Gallup were the first ou the scene. An heroic attempt was made to rescue the hoy, but when lie was reached lite was extinct. Tho body was found on the floor, apparently lust as he had sprung from the bed in agony. lhe camiieslick was ... "4 round on me neu, ann me supposition is that he placed the candle on the bed and dropped off to sleep before at . extinguishing it, hence the fire It ia charged that the lad wu locked in, which is not true thre being only sufficient fastening to tho door to keep il closed. It is also told that quilts were saved uninjured irom me bed, which is also a fancj sketch. Mr. and Mrs. Phillips are also censured for carelessness in giving the lad a candle to go to bed by. Evidently popular opinion would have the boy seut to bed in the dark. Precautions Pre-cautions against fire in the Phillips household were as carefully care-fully and completely taken as in any other average home. As nearly as we can make out, people have been doing a great deal of talking through ignorance or a shameful disregard dis-regard for tho facts in the case. All of which is neither ju3t or righteous, Christian or Mormon. Little Girls in Trouble. Some littlo girls, about 13 and 14 years of age, at Brigham City weie strolling about the streets one night long after they should have been at home with their mothers. They met some boys, who gave them some candy which was doped up with Spanish flies. The little folks had a close call for their lives, and the boys have an excellent start toward the penitentiary. In allowing their children to go prowling about town as they so often do in every Utah country to a n, parents are taking greater chances of starting their children chil-dren on the downward path than look good lo thinking people. Sad and sickening examples of the fruits of this policy can be seen - in every town. A dog that costs a dollar is more caretuliy watched at night than are half the growing girls and boys of Utah. The have Cuban . Commissioners come and gone with exactly the same results that attended the visit of the invesli- orntiiKT pnmmitlPA in "A Tvns 0v....b v ... Steer." This is, they have had a free feed at the expense of the investigating committee, and have gone home entirely satisfied. The Sevier Valley Echo, a new paper issued by Judge W. W. Wallace at' Elsinore, is at hand. The Judge is an old baud at the newspaper business, but after some efforts at reform has become a backslider. Poor Judge! However, we heartily wish him success with his Echo. An Astonishing But True Story ' My h jrao is ia Sidney, Ohio.
