Work has been commenced by the city ou the new reservoir at Maple-ton, Maple-ton, and the dyke is now up several feet. The new reservoir when completed com-pleted will cover forty acres of land, with water from three to twenty feet deep. Woik is being rushed in order that some of the vast volume of water now running to waste in Hubble Creek may be utilized. Beet weeding began last week, and is progressing nicely. Large numbers of small boys, and some girls, are employed. em-ployed. Some of the lads became disgusted at the wage scale and talked of a strike, but the movement lacked leaders and organization. A strike would render most of the beet farmers here helpless. The wage, scale runs from 50 cents up to $1.25 per day for this work. The acreage of beets planted in that section (West Weber county) is simply enormous. "It's wonderful,'7 as one man put it. Fields of beets extend out before one as far as the eye can see. The great majority of the fields are looking fine. But immense im-mense losses have been sustained through the protracted dry spell, high winds and late frosts, necessitating necessita-ting much replanting. Tomato To-mato raising is carried on in this section of Weber county on a gigantic gigan-tic scale. One farm of 100.000 plants was a sight woJth beholding. If operated by hand put in and water 3.000 Mr. Voss charges $1 an acre for planting. A large tank on top of the machine holds 5-1 gallons of water. It can be guaged to supply a gallon or a pint at the moment of planting. The machine is called a tobacco planter, but works with great success on tomatoes. Mr. Voss will plant, about 40 acres in that neighborhood, neighbor-hood, where many farmers are watch-'ng, watch-'ng, with great interest, the operations opera-tions of this labor-saving machine.
