The amount necessary neces-sary to purchase the right of way. etc., for the road, is in the neighborhood neighbor-hood of $3,000. about two-thirds of which has already been raised. Those in charge of the subscription lists think by Tuesday night the full amount will have been raised ;inr - within a few months the iron horse will come snorting into llebor. Salt Lake Herald. On Saturday, in the Fourth District Dis-trict court at Provo, George Curtis, of this city, appeared for trial on two cases of illegal liquor selling. The case is on appeal from Justice of the Peace J. S. Buyer's court. On motion of J.W.N. Electric lights and steam heat make it possible to dispense with the oil lamp and the car stove. Block signals have reduced the chances for collisions to the minimum by maintaining main-taining an absolute interval of space between trains. Utah county has been without a merchants' license ordinance, or-dinance, and today the board of county commissioners spent their time in framing one. It requires all merchants doing business in the county to pay an annual license, as follows: All business houses with a stock of $8000 and over. $30; from $5000 to 88000, 27; from $4000 to $5000, $24; from $3000 to $4000, $21: from $2000 to $3000, $18; from $1000 to $2000, $15; from $750 to $1000, $12; from $500 to $750, $9; from $350 to $500, $7.50; from $200 to $350, $6; $200 and less, $5. May 22. -The board of county commissioners met today in regular session and transacted the following business: A committee from the school trus tees of Utah county recommended tendent of schools some assistance by wav of expenses to attend -the National Na-tional Educational Association meeting meet-ing at Los Angeles in July, 1800. Taken under advisement. John Chadwick et al. petitioned for the mining recordsof Silver Lake and Forest City districts. Provo city sent a coraruuoicatiory which stated that hereafter the former for-mer will only pay one-flfth of the expenses ex-penses of the court house and grounds, instead of one-fourth, as heretofore. This is a chapter of a quarrel of old standing between this city and the c unty, to which the commissioners responded by sending to the city council the following ultimatum: First That the present agreement of one-fourth of the expenses to be paid by Provo city to Utah county may remain in force. Second Utah count will sell to Provo city all its interest in the court house and grounds. faThird Utah County will purchase from Provo city the one-sixth interest she has in the court house building.
