UVU's Utah Valley University's Universi-ty's school color is green, which is appropriate when looking at the school's continued con-tinued efforts in being an energy-efficient campus. So far, UVU has save approximately ap-proximately $1.2 million in the past three years due to consolidation efforts and improving power utilization. utiliza-tion. "WE have a rich heritage heri-tage at our institution for being green from the day it was founded in the mid 70's," said Denny Rucker, project director of engineering engi-neering at UVU. "Until recently, re-cently, green and conservation conser-vation were not popular is- that crosses two religious cultures and begins to heal the deep wounds of prejudice preju-dice in a neighborhood. They did not mix. They rarely entered each other's homes unless it was absolutely unavoidable. unavoid-able. Those narrow homes were perched on the banks of a wide, uncrossable river riv-er paved in stone. Parents on both sides of the street instilled fear and even hatred ha-tred in their children to keep them isolated on their own safe side of the river. Harry's sister, Lily, changed all that. She fell in love with a Christian boy named Arthur from across the street. The reaction of Lily's mother reminded me of the movie "Fiddler on the Roof." The mourning for a lost child who leaves the Jewish faith to marry a Christian is not easy for us to understand today. As Harry's mother grieves, surrounded by her friends, Lily entreats her to speaK to ner, look at her, hike. Literally! acknowledge her. UVU began its quest to be environmentally-friendly when it added a geother-mal geother-mal well in 1975, the first one in the state of Utah. Geothermal wells are used to transfer heat in and out of buildings through aquifers. Today, UVU continues con-tinues to add features on campus such as light-level sensors in hallways to conserve con-serve power as well as a computerized host system that monitors the entire campus. All of the buildings build-ings on the main campus benefit from the light, controls con-trols and new equipment. Many conservation projects were considered when the new library was built on campus last summer. The library is the most energy-efficient building in Utah with its major "green" features including: in-cluding: 1. Evaporative cooling instead of refrigerated. 2. New high-tech efficient effi-cient glass that cuts down 90 percent of heat gain due to solar loads. 3. Very high-tech computerized com-puterized building management manage-ment system that controls heat, cooling and lights. 4. We saw some bikers, dog walkers, joggers, and many parents with their children, About 15 minutes into the hike, it started to drip- drop (if you know what I mean). The smell of the rain wasn't so good at first. In fact some kids said, it " smelled like wet wild ani mals!" But once the water works stopped, it smelled like, well, whatever fall smells like! That is a great family when they finally reach America in 1922. I want to know more about those left behind. Hopefully Harry Bernstein will have time to write that book for all of us. tf Rnroc fnr Arlnlc Ir&DTlCl 1 Adolescents & Teens Invisalign -Clear Braces wmjiuuuiuk3 -Flexible Pavment ODtions D.M.D., P.C Springville JAYDEN YOUNG This Week's Awesome Brusher! ; With Full Orthodontic Treatment With this couDon onlv. 1 i . iui.. ..,. "Every remodeling or construction project is conservative con-servative in usage of utilities, utili-ties, waste and materials," Rucker said. "Becoming more green is a hard step when you are already far up the ladder to green." Although UVU is already high up on the ladder in its conversation methods, it still looks for opportunities to optimize and improve. For example, a new UVU Sustainability Committee was formed and recently held its first meeting. The committee's current goal is to focus its limited resources re-sources to the areas that need immediate attention on campus. They are planning plan-ning to have all future buildings that are added on campus be mandated "green" to follow suit with the rest of the buildings. ; "Its not logical to waste or throw away anything hat is useful as long as it can be used in a practical practi-cal manner," Rucker said. "This institution has always al-ways had that philosophy at its core and we have always been a shade of green. Management and facilities are committed to the most economical and practical operations that we can provide." smell! Again, the mountains, moun-tains, trees, and trail were just stunning! We can definitely defi-nitely see why people love the Utah mountains so much! During our hike we passed the golf course and walked for about one more mile before arriving at our destination; aka: the Rotary Ro-tary Park, for lunch. The food was great! The park was huge and fun! Some people played Capture the Flag, others - football' For- bidden Forest, swings, and some played with a home' less cat.
