Tommy Merrell, son of Scott and Corey Merrell, has made a difference in the lives of Sage Creek fifth grade students this year and those for years to come. As his Eagle Scout project, and unbeknownst to the teacher, Tommy collected and categorized by genre 373 chapter books for fifth grade teacher, LoriAnn Sleight After teaching second grade for the past 18 years Mrs. Sleight moved to fifth grade this year and was desperately in need of books for the older students. Additionally, Tommy created an easy to use spread-sheet so Mrs. Sleight would be able to locate the books by title or author. Mrs. Sleight and her students, express their thanks to Tommy for his many hours of hard work and to the community who graciously donated these books. Tommy, Sage Creek is thankful for you! In today's world those intent on committing crime have a myriad of choices laid before them. There are, of course, the 'old fashioned' crimes--burglaries and thefts-but thefts-but added to those are a host of "identity theft crimes." The Springville Police Department has arrested numerous persons who have stolen checks and credit cards as well as banking information, then used them throughout the state. Under most circumstances, circum-stances, banks and stores are forced to 'absorb' the losses caused by those crimes, thus lessening the impact on the victim's finances. fi-nances. They are able to do so by spreading those costs around to all of their customers. cus-tomers. However, these crimes cause much more than just U it momrn heating a 858 E. 100 N. They also cause a great deal of inconvenience incon-venience for the victims, who often later discover their credit ratings ruined, have collection agencies at their doors and more. Trying to restore your good name and good credit is a daunting task. That is why protecting one's identity iden-tity is rapidly becoming a concern. A recent episode in Springville involved a group of men who came to town intent on victimizing our community. Police received re-ceived a call from a local financial institution reporting report-ing what, for Springville, was a 'first-of-a-kind' type of criminal act. The suspects sus-pects used what is called a 'skimmer' to gather credit card information. Skimmers are small devices de-vices which are attacked to an ATM machine right where you swipe your credit or debit card. Often they match the ATM or gasoline pump card reader so well that they are barely bare-ly noticeable. These skimmers skim-mers read the magnetic strip on credit cards as they are swiped through the machine, then either transmit the information to someone waiting near-by-or store the information informa-tion for retrieval later. Unsuspecting customers swipe their cards, punch in a 'pin' number and the thieves have everything they need to manufacture new cards, order on-line, make ATM withdrawals, make transfers from bank accounts and more. With such high-tech resources re-sources in the hands of criminals, it becomes more and more important that citizens pay close attention to when, where and how they use credit and debit cards. Become familiar with the look of any card reading read-ing device you might use, if you see something unusual, un-usual, contact the bank or the Springville Police Department De-partment before you swipe your card. Look closely at card readers at gasoline pumps and ATM machines that are easily accessed. Monitor Moni-tor your banking and credit card transactions regularly and watch for unauthorized withdrawals, withdraw-als, purchases or transfers of money from your accounts. ac-counts. If you find something out of order, contact your bank or credit card company com-pany and the police department depart-ment immediately. "Working together, we can make Springville a safer saf-er community for you and for your 'identity,'" said Springville Police Chief Scott Finlayson. Prepmngyourhome for winter weather The first day of winter is not until Dec. 21st, but many homeowners may be taken by surprise by dropping drop-ping temperatures. "The time to winterize your home is before the cold weather really sets in," according ac-cording to Ray Palermo, director of public relations for Response Insurance. He said that taking a few simple steps now could save time, money and a lot of stress later on, adding that "prevention is the key in maintaining a warm, safe environment, and in minimizing the risk of winter win-ter damage." Indoors: Chimneys used for wood burning stoves and fireplaces should be checked for creosote build up. This tar-like substance can lead to a chimney fire if not cleaned off. Have a professional check your home heating system both for energy efficiency and carbon monoxide. Buy a carbon monoxide detector for any nearby living spaces and affix it near the ceiling.
