Show 20 SPRINGVILLE HERALD Thursday, February 14, 2008 Increase in influenza cases across state Increases in the number of people diagnosed with influenza have prompted the Utah Department of Health (UDOH) to upgrade Utah's status to "local" from "sporadic activity." To date, 59 influenza-associated hospitalizations have been reported, with 43 of those cases reported during December and January. The majority of reported cases are influenza type A and most have occurred in children less than 18 years of age. Influenza A is commonly com-monly associated with more severe disease and outbreaks. "While Utah has not yet reached peak activity, it isn't uncommon to see influenza influ-enza activity peak during January or February," says Dr. Robert Rolfs, UDOH state epidemiologist. "Vaccination "Vac-cination is still effective in preventing disease, especially, espe-cially, since more cases are occurring," says Dr. Rolfs. According to health officials, of-ficials, the risk of exposure to influenza increases during dur-ing this time of the season 1 V c ret 'OIR. . Crowded settings in restaurants res-taurants and other busi-nesses busi-nesses create an easy environment en-vironment for spreading influenza. School-aged children are also common contributors to influenza outbreaks. ' The UDOH recommends that people get vaccinated throughout the season to prevent serious illness and to keep from spreading the disease to others. Main Street Spanish Fork 794-2333 The entry-level, 5-pas-senger vehicle brings a tempting bid to the entry-level sedan market. It sells for a starting price of $12,710, only $80 up from 2007. According to new EPA regulations the Versa is expected to sip fuel at a rate of up to 27mpg city, and 33mpg highway - good news when considering current fuel prices. Price and fuel economy for the Versa vary according to choice of transmission, and options, as usual. It is also available as a hatchback, to which the same options apply, ap-ply, although at just barely higher prices. This review will focus on the sedan. The Versa is the most economical vehicle in Nissan's Nis-san's entire lineup, so if maximum fuel economy is top priority, and the car must be a Nissan, Versa's your car. This car's small appetite for fuel is due mainly to its compact size and small motor. Versa is powered by a 1.8 liter four-cylinder four-cylinder motor that generates gener-ates a practical l22hp and 127 Ib-ft of torque. This motor mo-tor can be mated to three different transmissions, a 6-spd manual, a four-speed automatic, or a Continuously Continu-ously Variable Transmissionor Transmis-sionor CVT. The Versa is expected to be most fuel-efficient fuel-efficient with the CVT, but the CVT is only available with a price hike of $3000 dollars and a bunch of other oth-er options. Highway mileage mile-age for the three transmis sions is as follows: 33mpg with the CVT, 31mpg with the automatic, and 31mpg for the 6-spd manual. As with almost all similar vehicles, ve-hicles, power hits the pavement pave-ment through the front wheels, which is certainly a plus during Utah's winter months. Nissan didn't want to create cre-ate a bare-bones, "cheap" car with the Versa, so what is a standard Versa like? To start off with it includes the standard motor and the 6-spd manual transmission. Brakes consist of discs up front and rotors in the back, and ABS is not standard, stan-dard, although it is available. avail-able. A number of nice touches include dual power outside mirrors and standard stan-dard air conditioning. Also worth mentioning are the tilt steering column, 6040 split fold-down rear seats, rear window defroster, front and rear cup holders, numerous storage compartments compart-ments and pockets, and an AMFMCD stereo with four speakers. It does come as a little bit of a surprise that a car so aimed at commuters would not come standard with cruise control, but of course, for a few more bucks, it is optional. Also optional are the automatic and CVT transmissions, nicer wheels, power windows win-dows and locks, a sunroof, anti-lock brakes, XM Satellite Satel-lite Radio, an iPod interface kit, a Rockford Fosgate subwoofer, a Bluetooth Hands-free Phone System, Nissan's Intelligent Key, and a bunch of other goodies good-ies to dress the Versa up, such as mud flaps or aluminum alumi-num kick plates. This car doesn't pretend at luxury, but it doesn't seem horribly econo-box either. Nissan made the interior design of this car a high priority, pri-ority, with versatile space being paramount, hence the car's name, Versa. Then-engineers Then-engineers created a small car that doesn't feel quite as small on the inside. This trend of useful, spacious interiors on small cars can also be seen in cars that compete with the Versa, such as the Honda FIT, so thanks to competition, passenger pas-senger comfort in these compacts is on the rise. What good is occupancy space if you can't keep the occupants safe? According Accord-ing to Nissan, Versa has received the highest crash test ratings thanks to build quality and airbags in the right places. Nissan must have done something right with this little car because the company com-pany claims to have sold over 59,000 of them within the first year they were on sale. Maybe that's why the Versa is certainly not an uncommon sight on Utah roads.
