Show i 1 11 SPRING VILLE HERALD, Section 2 Thursday, January 3, 2008 Springville Hi at prestigious Andrew Whiting, a senior se-nior at Springville High School, was recently recognized rec-ognized for his participation participa-tion in a nationally recognized recog-nized language training held at Brigham Young University last summer. In February of 2007, BYU was awarded two prestigious STAR-TALK STAR-TALK grants from the National Foreign Language Lan-guage Center. Money from the grants gave BYU the opportunity to host two language camps for high school age students, stu-dents, one in Arabic and one in Chinese. Whiting was selected among hundreds hun-dreds of applicants nation-wide to be one of 12 participants in the STAR-TALK STAR-TALK Arabic camp. The 12 students accepted accept-ed into the prestigious camp lived on campus where they were immersed im-mersed in the Arabic culture cul-ture and language. Classes Class-es during the intense three and one-half week camp began as early as 7 a.m. and often lasted un til 10 p.m. . Teachers for the camp included Muhammad Eissa, a double doctorate specifically for the camp. Professor Belnap said of Andrew's participation in the program, "Andrew proved to be one of the best students in the pro gram, outscored on the final exam by only one student, who, unlike Andrew, An-drew, came to the program pro-gram with a substantial background in Arabic." Whiting will graduate from Springville High School this May and plans to continue his study of Arabic at BYU in the fall. . She chose to work at Hobble Creek to help her mother, a teacher at Hobble Hob-ble Creek with a large caseload of students. Hobble Creek Elementary Elemen-tary school serves education edu-cation to children varying vary-ing from pre-school to sixth grade. The children that Jennifer works with havespeech or language disabilities; such as: Articulation Ar-ticulation errors, fluency (stuttering), grammar skills, poor vocabulary skills, andor processing disabilities. She finalizes final-izes her day by providing therapy for students with speech impairments. In between each session, ses-sion, Jennifer records each student's progress. Jennifer keeps on file exactly ex-actly what she did to help that student. Although she may not ultimately choose this career, Jennifer Jen-nifer loves working with and, helping children.
