Babbitt SPRINGVILLE HERALD A major landmark was razed, city elections were held, fires demolished several structures and two new elementary schools were officially opened in the SpringvilleMapleton area dur-ing dur-ing 2007. Here is a wrap-up of some of the news and events that affected af-fected the lives of local residents during the past year: January: The historic LDS chapel at 451 S. Main in Springville was razed after it was determined that the costs of repairing the building build-ing would be greater than the value of the building if it were restored. The building sustained about $600,000 in damage when it caught fire in July of 2006. Arson Ar-son was believed to be the cause of the fire. . John A. Penrod was hired as the new Springville city attorney, attor-ney, replacing Troy Fitzgerald who was hired to serve as the Springville city administrator. February: Springville Junior High School principal Everett Kelepolo was ; honored as Utah's 2006-07 Principal Prin-cipal of the Year. Mapleton Junior High School music teacher Deanne Helquist was named Utah's Outstanding It is the desire of Nebo School District that all schools develop and maintain strong community commu-nity loyalty,, balance, equity and fairness. Accordingly, it is the district's position and preference prefer-ence that students should attend school within the boundaries in which they reside. Notwithstanding Notwithstand-ing this preference, resident students stu-dents may be able to attend another an-other school within the district through open enrollment. Springville Junior High Head Custodian Sue Bell said the smokestack, which is used to vent the school's boiler, no longer met earthquake code requirements. John Young, formerly with Geneva Rock, has accepted the position of VP of Ready-Mixed Concrete, a new position at Clyde Companies made necessary by the strong growth of the last few years. He will oversee the ready mix concrete operations opera-tions of all subsidiary companies: Geneva Rock, Sunroc Corporation Corpo-ration and Gorge Rock. Young brings over 40 years of experience experi-ence in ready-mixed concrete operations and is one of the most recognized individuals in the industry. Young has spent his entire working career at Geneva Rock and is responsible for building it into the largest privately owned ready -mixed concrete provider in the intermountain area. As assistants to Young, Jerry Hall and LaNette Andrews will also leave Geneva Rock and join Clyde Companies.
