Show SPRINGVILLE HERALD Thursday, October 11, 2007 First Special Education Extravaganza held 0 - V", ' 12 Candi Higley SPRINGVILLE HERALD The field at Mapleton Junior Ju-nior High School was busy with students from across Nebo School District as the first Special Education Extravaganza was held on Monday, Oct. 8, from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Students at the junior high worked as peer tutors tu-tors as well as peer judges, helping special education students from Nebo School District participate in a variety va-riety of field events which included the shot put, the high jump and long jump, Frisbee golf and various races. Peer tutors from the junior ju-nior high helped assist the students in each event, measuring distances and recording scores from the events. At the end of the day, an awards ceremony was held which acknowledged acknowl-edged each student who participated in the events. "This has been really fun for me to help as a peer tutor," tu-tor," said Amy Francis, a ninth-grader at the junior high. "It gives me a good opportunity to get to know the students and become friends with them. It has been a good experience." The event was organized orga-nized by Linda Lewis and Jo Edan Parker, who are hoping the event will become be-come an annual one that will bring out the special education students in the district and give them the opportunity to participate in events showing their physical best. SHS Orchestra fund-miser and concert October 23 The Springville High School Philharmonic Orchestra Or-chestra has received a prestigious invitation to perform at the ASTA National Na-tional Orchestra Festival in Albuquerque February 28 - March 1. With that goal in mind, they are conducting a Silent Auction Auc-tion and Reception before their next concert with all proceeds going to defray expenses for their trip to New Mexico. The concert will be Tuesday, Oct. 23, in the SHS Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. A fund-raising reception re-ception will be held beginning begin-ning at 6 that same evening eve-ning in the SHS cafeteria featuring a dessert bar and a silent auction. Proceeds will benefit the Children Justice Center in Provo. Barbara Smith, from Channel 4 News will emcee em-cee this year's event and Jill Stevens, Miss Utah 2007, will act as the honorary honor-ary chair. The Doll House Festival will be held at the Springville Spring-ville Museum of Art on Friday and Saturday, Oct. , 12 and 13 and is free. The Children's Justice Center was formed in 1991 to address the ever increasing in-creasing needs of abused children in Utah Valley. The center provides investigative in-vestigative and legal services, ser-vices, counseling and relief for children and families in need. Some operations opera-tions costs must be raised through public donations. Statistics show that one girl in four and one boy in six will be molested in Utah Valley this year. More than 3,500 cases of child abuse were reported and investigated investi-gated in 2006 .
