Show SPRINGVILLE HERALD Thursday, October 4, 2007 The Sixth Gear: Hyundai Veracruz Books, like friends, Injoy or sadness, flowers should be few and well are our constant friends, chosen. - Samuel Peterson - Kozuko Okakura 22 Dtott fa "pcMim& BREVftNQ UP HALLOWEEN FUN .'.'SINCE 1222. si X ... f UX6E8& KOVtLTES, COSTUSIES, SHOES i : 1 1 70 NOHTfl MAIN SPANISH FOEK Mark Conroy STAFF WRITER This week when I found out that I was getting a Hyundai Veracruz, a new model just out from Hyundai. Hyun-dai. I thought a Hyundai? Since this was the' first Hyundai that I have had the opportunity to drive, I was pleasantly surprised at how nice this new crossover was inside and out. Hyundai has made this vehicle specifically target the Honda Pilot and the Toyota Highlander while offering more upscale amenities ame-nities as cars that cost twice as much. My first impressions of the Veracruz were great. . i ' V-'. The looks from the outside were outstanding, and value of the car for the money was great. I could tell, right from the onset of the test drive. The Veracurz that I received re-ceived to test drive was the limited edition. The only option not included was a DVD and surround sound system. This option is only available on the SE and the .limited edition. If you have smaller children and would like peace and quiet when driving, this would definitely definite-ly be an option worth looking look-ing into. Also for '2008, the Veracruz Vera-cruz Limited model adds several high-demand features fea-tures to its long list of standard stan-dard equipment. This includes in-cludes memory settings for the power driver seat, exterior ex-terior mirrors and steering wheel, power tilttelescopic steering wheel, adjustable gas and brake pedals, proximity prox-imity key with immobilizer, rain-sensing wipers, 115-volt power outlets and lighted door scuff plates. Other than that the only difference between the Limited the SE and the GLS would be the leather interior inte-rior which was really nice and probably easier to keep clean The automatic lift gate really comes in handy when your arms are full of grocer ies or other items. A click of the remote entry opens the gate. Then when you have loaded everything a touch of a button located on the bottom bot-tom of the gate and it comes down automatically. The Limited and SE also come with 18" wheels as opposed to the 17" wheels on the GLS and a dual front temperature control. The limited also has a standard electric sunroof and heated ' seats that are options on the other models. They are great during the cold winters win-ters in Utah. Out on the road the Veracruz Ve-racruz handled really well. There was no loss of power when overtaking other vehicles ve-hicles on the freeway, and it was able to cruise at 75mph with no problem at al Even going up hill at a high speed the power did not drop off. The Veracruz is equipped with a 3.8 liter V6 that provides pro-vides 260 horsepower and 257 LB-ft of torque. . The aluminum block and head help to reduce weight and improve overall efficiency efficien-cy of the engine and car, and with the Continuously Variable-Valve Timing (CWT) and the Variable Intake System Sys-tem (VIS), the Veracruz is able to achieve a very nice 23 mpg on the highway and 16 mpg around town. I was able to get just slightly higher numbers during the test drive. On a trip to Salt Lake and back I got around 26 mpg. i") ! The Veracruz is also protected pro-tected by one of the best warranties in the business. With a five-year60,000 mile bumper-to-bumper protection protec-tion it would be hard to go wrong if looking for a lasting last-ing family value. For a family of up to six' this would be a great choice for the money and would not break the bank every time you went to the gas sta-tioa sta-tioa Although the rear seats were somewhat uncomfortable uncom-fortable they would work great for younger children. Adults would have a hard time riding back there for any length of time as there is not a lot of leg room. Our test drive Veracruz also had a broken clasp on one of the back seats making mak-ing it harder to get up and down, with only 5000 miles this seemed to be the only drawback that came up during dur-ing the week-long test. Overall this is a great car for a medium size family with lots of room and configurations con-figurations to help you get to your destination in comfort com-fort and style. Base price: $26,900 Price as tested: $34,050 Conroy can be reached at HYPERLINK "mailto: sixth.gear.heraldgmail. com" sixth. gear. heraldgmail.com or visit his blog at HYPERLINK "http:sixthgearhera.ld. blogspot.com" http:sixth-gearherald.blogspot.com ! r 5 t i "V I X it i.
