HiT.-s.'. The Pet Dish Rabies in do: ( Dr. Harotd Davis D.V.M. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has formally declared the elimination of the type of rabies previously found in dogs in the United States. "The elimination of canine rabies in the United States represents one of the major public health success suc-cess stories in the last 50 years " states Dr. Charles Rupprecht, Chief of the CDC Rabies Program. He notes that there is still much to be done to help the situation globally. - Rabies in humans is preventable, yet accounts for at least 55,000 deaths annually around the world; almost al-most one death every 10 minutes. In the United States, canine rabies elimination was achieved by programs that required the vaccination and licensing of dogs and also stray dog control. Rupprecht warns that "the elimination of dog-to-dog transmission of rabies does not mean that people in the USA can stop vaccinating their pets against rabies. Rabies is ever-present in wildlife and can be transmitted to dogs or other pets. We need to stay vigilant" Despite the elimination of canine rabies, the disease remains a human threat in the States, particularly from bats. Rabies can also be a threat through spillover spill-over infections from wildlife to domestic animals adaptation ad-aptation to new animal reservoirs, movement of po tentially infected animals, and lack of adequate vac cination coverage of domestic animals, particularly cats ana dogs. State and local levels which include our public health infrastructure, quarantine stations, local ani mal control programs, veterinarians, and clinicians j have made a tremendous effort in the past and con- tsnue to do so to help keep the canine rabies-free sta au5 in ine - 1 4- A M-i m m- ta r mm '1 w A - .w... . . conn nnn'd CALL TODAY FOR EXCUJSfVE BVCENT7VES tfA s1 801.755.9333L 801 .556.4648 F J t Kim McKINLEYt W GOLDBERG .
