Show SPRINGVILLE HERALD 3 Controversial Editor: , I would likeTo add my name to the growing list of Springvffle citizens who are up in arms about the future status of the city park. We cannot allow what the city has proposed nor should we sit back and do nothing and have our : beautiful park destroyed, One cannot simply replace the beauty of the trees cur- rently growing in the park ; nor should we have too. I agree with Beth Sum-sion's Sum-sion's letter in the Springville Spring-ville Herald on August 16th regarding the safety factors in having the fire department built on 100 West. This is a very narrow nar-row street where one finds cars parked on both sides of the street at all times. This is a quiet residential area with the posted speed limit of 25 MPH. What will the city planners plan-ners do if a child is tragically tragi-cally killed by one of the fire trucks rushing to fight a fire? If this were to happen hap-pen would the city then be held libel for that death? ' We do need the new public facilities (library, fire station, public safety and city offices) that our tax dollars can buy, but not at the expense of fiscal irresponsibility. I urge the citizens of Springville to visit the website at www. springville.org and see for themselves the city's plan. The Springville City Facility Fa-cility Update describing their plan is listed at the bottom link of the city's web page. The "footprint" picture on each page shows where each building will be. For example, page 13 of the Springville City Facility Update clearly indicates in-dicates how much of the city park will be consumed by the fire station. In case one does not have access to the Internet, visit the library they will assist in your search for information infor-mation hi On August 21st I attended attend-ed the city council meeting and listened to each coun- Mapleton police report Mapleton police had 55 calls from August 14 to 21 with 19 of those for animal problems. It is apparent ap-parent the council will all vote yes at their upcoming September meeting. They do not feel there are safety issues with this plan and will trade green space for equal green space. Their plan is to destroy the west side of the beau- tiful Springville City Park and give us a new park on the east side of Main Street without mature trees. If this plan does indeed pass, the citizens of Springville will certainly know who not to vote for in the upcoming up-coming municipal election. It is hard to imagine why the city council would want to move the library over to where the fire station is currently located. We all know Hobble Creek water runs very high during the annual spring run off and could create hazards for the children attending the library. Our library should be the heart of our community where citizens come seeking seek-ing information and select books for casual reading or use the Internet; where children can attend story telling sessions and receive help from the librarians in their reading enjoyment. To quote Springville City Facility Update regarding their future plans ..."The goal is to maximize park space and maintain a park atmosphere that is conducive condu-cive to draw people to the area. A playground should be planned in conjunction with the library." Does the city, in their decision to put the library next to Hobble Creek, indeed in-deed plan a playground for children next to the water? What parents would want their children playing at this park unattended and without mature trees to shade their enjoyment? ; What happens if the library bond does not pass in the 2008 municipal munici-pal election? The citizens of Springville rejected a similar bond four years ago. Funds have already arrested on a commitment order to the Utah County Jail. Without funds from the bond election, the library would then .stay in their current location. If the city goes through with their current plan without passage of the library li-brary bond, the fire station will be built next to the library li-brary on the north west section of the city park. That would mean the children chil-dren attending the library would be subject to the movements of the emergency emer-gency vehicles. If the 2008 bond does not pass, then all city services would be located in the city center, block! - Most important to this issue, what happens to the buildings currently housing the police and fire departments on Main Street? I understand these buildings will then be torn down and the property left vacant. In anticipation of rebuilding rebuild-ing the library on the east side of Main Street (where the fire station now stands) the city has already purchased pur-chased land on 100 East next to Hobble Creek for the new proposed park. Has the city council really thought through all issues regarding their plans? F OP BY TO FREE QUOT! FAVORITE j LUBE, OIL & FILTER ; i mri iinFS- Lube. Oil & Filter. Tire i !
