Investigators say Turner Turn-er used the screen name "bpredstiff89" in Internet chat rooms and the name "Scott Taylor" would appear ap-pear on a buddy list. On June 21 Turner allegedly asked an under-age girl to meet him so he could touch her breasts and kiss. The girl was actually an undercover under-cover officer and Turner was booked in the Salt Lake County Jail on suspicion sus-picion of enticing a minor over the Internet, a second-degree felony. After the arrest, investigators inves-tigators received information informa-tion that Turner may have had sexual relations with two under-age girls he met online and another girl he met while running in a Murray neighborhood. All of the encounters allegedly occurred during the past two-and-a-half years. As a former Canadian Cana-dian I have to try to catch up to the rest of you born and bred so I read books about those very American things like Canadian bacon ba-con and Canadian vanilla ice cream (cause we don't actually have these in Canada, Can-ada, eh?). . This week I read "The Supremes' Greatest Hits" by Michael G. Trachtman and I really did learn a lot about how the Supreme Court protects our most basic constitutional rights. Using brief descriptions of selected cases, Trachtman Tracht-man illuminates how the Supreme Court interprets the Constitution and uses its power of judicial review to define, and redefine, our way of life. The Supreme Court desegregated de-segregated the schools. The Supreme Court allowed the internment of Japanese-Americans Japanese-Americans during World War II. The Supreme Court decided who you may, and may not, refuse to serve in your restaurant. The Suj preme Court even recently decided how the forty -third president of the United States would be elected. The Supreme Court determined de-termined when your city council may appropriate your backyard and make it a parking lot for a shopping shop-ping mall. The 34 cases are grouped into 10 chapters with themes such as the separation separa-tion of church and state, so you can skip around and look at subjects that are of most interest to you. There are of course the famous cases like Brown v. The Board of Education, but I found less well-known cases to be just as fascinating. fascinat-ing. I learned more about the Constitution, The Bill of Rights and the Supreme Court than when I studied for my US citizenship test. You don't need to be a lawyer to understand this book, or even a born and bred thanks to the absence of legal jargon - but I am sending this to Sean who is a student in law school for him to read sitting on the deck as he slurps his Canadian vanilla ice cream cone. day of kindergarten is August 28.
