Rogers You and I live in a democracy democ-racy that celebrates each person's right to think and act according to his or her beliefs, conscience and self-interest, self-interest, as long as our actions ac-tions dp not harm others. We also live in a culture that exalts ex-alts tolerance of others' ideas above nearly everything else. Thinking differently, being tolerant-these two values sometimes clash. It is con am a Christian and, thus, I am not a Muslim, I mean that I disagree with Islamic beliefs be-liefs about God, the world, the person of Christ, and a number of other theological viewpoints. I disagree with their religious ideas. I am not attacking people. I do not hate or even necessarily dislike dis-like any given Muslim individual indi-vidual or Muslims in general. I certainly do not advocate any harm toward them, nor do I want to curtail their religious reli-gious freedom. But I find that when I publicly pub-licly disagree with ideas, people peo-ple want to transform my disagreement with ideas into disdain of the person or group expressing those ideas. This is not a healthy trend in our democracy, and it's certainly not a good modus operandi for Christian Christ-ian people. But neither nei-ther does it say that disagreement dis-agreement is tantamount to contempt. Rather, at least two scriptural injunctions can help us here. The Bible says, "Love God and love your neighbor as yourself." Then it says, Speak the truth in love." So we begin with a right relationship rela-tionship with God and therefore there-fore a right attitude toward every other human being. Then, I should be able to disagree with someone even as I appreciate them. This is not always easy, but let me say this lovingly, it's the truth.
