The girls' only loss this season was a quirky one against Provo and they had something to prove. In the first 30 seconds, Brit . ft Jessica Rogers takes control of the ball durring the Provo game last week. The Lady Devils revenged their only loss of the season 3 to 1. Siddoway muscled a ball through to Haylie Francis. Francis' shot was off-frame but the play sent a message to Provo that there would be no sleepy Devils this time around. Three minutes later, Sydney Syd-ney Hamilton received a link from the back line and worked the ball deep up the right wing. She crossed the ball to Francis at the penalty spot. The ball skipped off of Francis' feet but had enough momentum to reach Siddoway on the far post. Siddoway cut the ball back and fired a liner that went into the net on the right side. Four minutes. 1-nil. Three minutes later, Karissa Henage deftly swiped a clearance from the Bulldog midfielders. She danced and stepped over in front of two defenders. She juked them and as they leaned left, she pushed the ball to a small gap on the right. In close quarters, the keeper elected to stay on her line. With little room to spare, Henage finessed the ball over the keeper's leap and into the top or the goal. Seven minutes. 2-nil. The score line of 2-nil is considered treacherous for an offense. 2-nil often leads to a sense of complacency on both sides of the ball. In this case, it wasn't true. There was no let up. The Devils kept up their intensity intensi-ty and dominance in the midfield. Another truism is that the team that dominates domi-nates the midfield will typically typi-cally win the match. Ask for Deana. case, that adage was true. Siddoway, Hamilton, Jessica Jessi-ca Rogers, Karlie Jensen, Chase Joyner, Kaylyn Swanson, and Caitlyn Duncan Dun-can fought for every inch of turf. When teams get frustrated frus-trated with the Devils' dominance domi-nance of the mid-field, they tend to resort to long through-balls over the top to stimulate offense. It usually doesn't work. Jessie Bench, Katie Wilson, Kimber Kill-pack, Kill-pack, and Heather Hatfield are just too fast, organized and strong for that strategy to succeed. The girls were holding court and controlling control-ling the game. In the 34th minute Provo managed to squirt a ball down the left side to the 18. As the girls organized around their marks, the winger gambled on a diagonal diago-nal chip that just got over Hannah Silvey's fingers and into the net. The Devils had a run of four clean sheets going into the game and the Bulldogs' goal clearly annoyed an-noyed them. Deeper resolve was forthcoming. In the second half Provo had very few runs on goal. The Devils squelched everything every-thing and pounded away with their own attack. The girls launched shot after shot with corner kicks sometimes coming in pairs. The girls clearly wanted a two-goal advantage to put all doubts to rest. The clincher came in the 58th minute. Rachel Fischer took a ball on the right wing at about the 30. Fischer scrapped her way through three tackles up to the 15 and snapped a cross between be-tween two defenders to Siddoway Sid-doway on the far side. Siddoway Sid-doway one-touched the ball back across the face of the goal to Crosby Joyner who dribbled around one defender defend-er and touched the ball into THE! Sweet revenge came with a final score of 3-1. 3-1. Two days later, the ladies took on Timpview. The T-birds T-birds have had a disappointing disappoint-ing season and their record is probably less than they deserve. They are very fast and physical. It was sure to be a thrilling game with many complaints from the crowd to the referees. The match was very even. Both teams fought hard for possession. It took until the 32nd minute for a break in the score line. Crosby Joyner Joyn-er ran into heavy traffic in the T-birds' box. She fronted front-ed two defenders and slid a drop ball to Jessica Rogers who had charged from mid-field. mid-field. Rogers drove the ball sharply into the top left corner cor-ner of the net from 25 yards out. The keeper had no chance, to defend Rogers' strong shot. Springville, 1-nil. 1-nil. Timpview fought back hard. A few minutes after the goal, one of the T-birds tripped Joyner from behind and was awarded a yellow card for her troubles. The yellow card was a warning to her and both teams that things were getting chippy. Still, aggressive play continued contin-ued with vocal complaints from both teams' fans. It took until the 51st minute to finish the T-birds off. Sydney Hamilton worked through two tackles tack-les and hustled after a heavy touch that went to the end line just to the right of the goal. She recovered it before it could go out, spun around and pulled it back to Karissa Henage at the 12. Henage wasted no time in spotting the ball into the far corner of the net. It was a clever shot for which the Timpview keeper had no answer. Final score, Springville, 2- ' nil. Henage may be an understated under-stated star of the show. She quietly goes about her work, but she has outstanding outstand-ing instincts wherever she is played. On the back line she positions and covers well. In the midfield, she reads the defense and triggers trig-gers the offense. On the front line she unselfishly creates opportunities for others and delivers goals herself. On set pieces, she has a deft touch for the corner cor-ner of the net. Indeed, by Thursday,. Henage led the team in total offense with 24 points on 10 goals and 4 assists. as-sists. By the end of the week, the Lady Red Devils had the best overall record of any 4-A 4-A team in the state (11-1-1). They were ranked second in the state and were on top of the region table, two points clear of Orem. With three games left and Payson as the final regular season match, the probabilities were very good to repeat as region champions. Next up, however, was Orem who might have something to say about it. We'd have to wait and see. , V |
