SHS football teams sets goal to win playoff game Jared Lloyd STAFF WRITER Of all the Utah Valley teams in 2004, Springville easily earned the "Change in Altitude" Award No team was higher during the regular season, as the Red Devils won 10 straight games, knocked off mighty Timpview by 10 points and held the No. 1 spot heading into the playoffs. No other team saw the same type of heartbreak either, as Springville watched its state title hopes die in a 37-34 double-overtime loss to Logan in the first round. The final image for a squad that had such success was players sprawled on the grass in disbelief or throwing their helmets hel-mets in frustration as the Grizzlies Griz-zlies celebrated. The 2004 season is now just a footnote in Utah high school football history, but the 2005 Red Devils don't plan to forget. "I think it's going to make our team push harder and want it more, after seeing the disappointment disap-pointment in the playoffs," said Springville senior tight endlinebacker endline-backer Riley Allred. "We're going go-ing to work a lot harder this year." It certainly won't be the same team, as star running back Trevyn Smith and a number of other key players graduated. "We're going to be really in experienced," said head coach Doug Bills . "We're going to be senior oriented, but we had some pretty good players last year and didn't play a lot of underclassmen un-derclassmen We're going to need the first three or four games to get some varsity experience." expe-rience." Even without the big names, last year's Region 6 champions believe they will still be competitive competi-tive in the new Region 7. "I think we have high expectations expec-tations for ourselves," Allred said. "I know most people don't think we'll do much, but our guys have been working really hard through the summer and I think we should be pretty good." Bills expects Allred to take on an important role on offense, but said the team's success might depend on how senior quarterback Trenton Raught does in the spotlight. The good news for Raught is that he has some experience in front of him on the line, with J.D. Slack and Casey Cloward. "We had two offensive linemen line-men who played a lot last year, so that will be one of our strengths," Bills said. "We're going go-ing to have a big line." The Red Devils should be talented tal-ented in the trenches, but Bills says the backfields on both sides of the ball need to improve. "I think we. have some ath letes who can run around and compete," Bills said. "But I think our defensive backf ield and our offensive backfield are question marks right now." Springville knows better than to expect any mercy from the teams it beat in 2004. "I'm sure a lot of people are looking to pay us back for what we did to them last year," Bills said. But the young Red Devils have a dear goal in mind as they head into the season "These kids know they don't have the experience the other guys had," Bills said. "But they've set their sights on doing something that that great team last year couldn't do and that is win a playoff game." Allred said: "We want to get past the first round of the playoffs. play-offs. We need everybody to come together and play as a team." "We've had a pretty good tradition tra-dition here at Springville and they stepped up last year and took it to another level," Bills said. "These kids want to do it a little better. I think we'll be able to compete for a region title and hopefully compete in the play- c !l , o - 1 D o CO -sz .
