To succeed is nothing. It's an accident; but to feel no doubts about oneself is something some-thing very different; it is character. - Marie Leneru 101 critical days of summer Memorial Day marks the beginning of the "101 Critical Days of Summer." ; Every year, more people are injured or killed in motor vehicle crashes between Memorial Day and Labor Day than in any other period of the year. In the United States, more than a hundred lives could be saved if all motor vehicle occupants oc-cupants were properly buckled buck-led up this Memorial Day weekend, according to estimates esti-mates from the National Safety Council. Locally, 21 Utahns have died over the past five years during this busy holiday weekend, and the Utah Safety Safe-ty Council estimates that four Utahns may be fatally injured in crashes this Memorial Day weekend. The Utah Safety Council offers motorists the following follow-ing safe driving and travel ing tips for this busy weekend: week-end: Buckle Up! Safety belt and child safety seat use are the easiest and most effective ways to protect yourself while on the roadways. When taking longer trips, allow plenty of travel time so that you can take frequent breaks. Drowsiness can reduce reaction re-action time almost as much as drinking. Obey the speed limit. Speed is a significant contributor con-tributor in fatal crashes. Don't drink and drive. If you know you will be drinking drink-ing alcohol, designate a driver dri-ver who will not drink and can drive you home. Keep a safe following distance; dis-tance; use the "three second" rule. Drive friendly and be courteous. The Utah Safety Council encourages everyone to have a safe and fun holiday and to remember that whatever what-ever the activity, protect, yourself and your family by buckling up. A simple decision to wear a safety belt could save your life. The Utah Safety Council urges all motorists to wear safety belts and properly buckle children in child safety safe-ty seats. Over half of all children killed in crashes are completely com-pletely unrestrained. Never place a child safety seat in front of a passenger side air bag, and always properly restrain re-strain all children twelve and under in the back seat. It is by far the safest place.
