Alex Booth SHS STAFF WRITER Over the past school year there have been many articles arti-cles about Doc Tobler and his retirement. As a matter of fact there have been so many articles that some may have begun to wonder "Is it overkill?"or "Is it too much?" The answer: No. It is not enough. Not even nearly enough. It would be impossible to fully express the effects that Doc has had on the students of SHS and the community as a whole. The SHS journalism journal-ism class has done its best to convey its gratitude and support sup-port for one of the greatest teachers to have ever (past, present and future) taught at SHS. Doc, over the course of his career here at SHS, has influenced influ-enced the lives of thousands of students. Yes, thousands. He has taught and led SHS marching bands and sym- Ehonic bands to earn literally undreds of trophies and awards. Doc has helped produce some of the best and brightest bright-est young musicians that Utah has to offer. He has helped train generations of musically inclined students. He has brought a reputation of quality and excellence to SHS and our community. For many students, every year you get a new teacher for a new class. However with music teachers here at SHS, if you continue in music mu-sic through your high school career, you have a constant and familiar face, a friend, and teacher. "Doc is like a second father to me, and the band is like the rest of my family," Mindy Mink told me. She continued to say, "It's de- Eressing that Doc is leaving ecause it's going to be hard to find a director who has as big of a heart as Doc does. He cares about every individual indi-vidual band member and goes out of his way to make sure that they know he cares." Mark Tingy stated that "Doc is like a big teddy bear, except he's human and has real hair and real eyes and can walk and talk and think, but other than that, he's exactly ex-actly like a teddy bear." This playful comment highlights a relationship that only the luckiest of students experience experi-ence with their teachers. Doc has influenced young musicians for over 30 years. He has brought joy and music mu-sic to the lives of countless people. We will miss him here at SHS and we hope that he has a happy retirement retire-ment full of as much music as he wants. We'll miss you Doc. The Boys & Girls Track Teams had a great showing at the State Meet this past weekend at BYU. The girls relay team of Kayla Warren, Allissa Huffaker, Caitlin Mecham and Jessie Bench set school records in the 4x100 relay, 50.01 seconds (4th place), and also the 4x400m relay 4:05.8 (8th place). Allissa Huffaker also placed fifth in the 100m hurdles, hur-dles, followed by Lindsey Nance who was eighth, and Nicole Campbell was ninth in the javelin. The boys were led by Rex Shields who placed fourth in the 1600m run (4:29.6), and third in the 3200m run (9:31.8), breaking his own school record by fourteen seconds. Phil Mecham was ninth in the 800m run, and the 4x400 relay was seventh. 1 f v Kayla Waren runs for SHS. glf.S yte4WH Igrii Nathan Graves moves ahead www.cars.mart.com Supports the Springville High School RED DEVILS Come see us for the Best Deals on pre-oivned cars!
