Fortunately for the Red Devils, they got three solid outings from their starting pitchers and clutch relief pitching pitch-ing from a pair of juniors. SHS vs. Carbon Brian Bulow was named Springville's opening day starter this season coming off a 7-1 record in 2004 and a best-in-state ERA of just 0.94. Against Carbon, he pitched 5 strong innings allowing only 2 hits and 0 runs while striking out 7 Dino batters. Junior Danny Dan-ny Mecham pitched the final 2 innings to earn the save. Centerfielder Trevor Graves provided all the run support with 5 RBIs on 2 hits during the game. In his first at-bat, with the bases loaded, Graves lined a single into left field which took a bad hop and f lanced off the left fielder al-wing al-wing all 3 runners to score. His next time up, with 2 runners run-ners on base, Graves laid down a perfect bunt for a base hit and both runners scored when Carbon's pitcher threw the ball down the right field line. SHS vs. Murray Josh Dohner's first start of the year was no easy draw. Last year's state tournament finalist Murray High School is one of the best hitting teams in the state. Nonetheless, Dohner held the Spartans to 5 hits and only 3 runs to earn his first victory vic-tory of 2005. Junior Riley Allred pitched 2 innings of scoreless relief to pick up the save. Catcher Alex Johnson got the scoring started when he hit a line drive solo HR to left-center field. Johnson, Kirk Doxey and Mason Casper all had 2 hits during the game to lead the Devils past the Spartans for the 4-3 win.
