Show Page Four - The Springville Herald - February 12, 2003 E.8SG.10 PUODGHs OIF your money back by Norley Hall It sounds wonderfulto lose all those pounds of flab by simply taking a pill. Of course if it doesn't work I can get all my money back anyway-can't I? Unfortunately, Unfortu-nately, this is only one of many fraudulent claims being made to bolster the enormous amount of money already being stolen from the public by such schemes. Despite claims such as "miracle cure," "new discovery" or "magical," most purported weight loss schemes are unproven and mostly unworkable. un-workable. As for getting your money mon-ey back, good luck. Most schemes are perpetrated by telemarketing scam artists who have no permanent base of operations. To get money back from them is practically impossible. Unfortunately, weight loss schemes are not the only health fraud conspiracies being used against an unsuspecting unsus-pecting public. Besides the weight loss pills the FDA has an alert on two other current rip-offs. One is called "Pure emu oil" and is touted as being extremely beneficial in the treatment of rheumatism, arthritisinfections, prostate problems, ulcers, cancer, heart trouble, hardening of the arteries, diabetes and "completely eliminating gangrene." To sell this wonderful cure all product the marketer, market-er, who has never submitted to the FDA any data to support sup-port the product's safe and effective use, relies instead on unsubstantiated testimonies testimo-nies of persons who have supposedly been miraculously "cured" by the product. The FDA warns that testimonies Good Character Awards for the month of January at Grant Elementary School went to Brynley Case, Caitlyn Erickson, Elissa Coral and Maritza Lopez. The other alert is again related to weight loss. This time, instead of a pill, it is an over-the-counter transdermal transder-mal weight loss patch. In spite of the claim that this is a "healthy, simple and naturally natu-rally way to help you lose and control your weight," none of the claims for the product have been proven. The FDA requires evidence evi-dence of effectiveness in the form of a new drug application, applica-tion, before the product can be marketed legally. The FDA warns us not to be fooled by such terms as "natural." This claim is meaningless. For instance, poison mushrooms which can kill you are also "natural." Buyers should beware of any product that relies on testimonies, uses meaningless medical jargon, makes paranoid para-noid accusations against the medical profession and makes extreme claims for the effectiveness of their product. prod-uct. The FDA suggests that products should be checked out by talking to a doctor, checking with the Better Business Bureau or with an appropriate health professional profession-al group or to contact the closest FDA office. Book Review by Ellen "The Stolen Blue" is a mystery by Judith Van Gie-son, Gie-son, whose works I have not read before. Her main character char-acter in this book, is Claire and she is a librarian for a university in New Mexico. Her former co-worker, Burke, Bur-ke, seriously ill with emphysema, emphy-sema, donates his valuable book collection to the university univer-sity library through Claire. When she drives 250 miles to pick up the collection her friend also informs her that he has named her his personal person-al representative in his will and has left his multi-million dollar ranch to only one of his children, Mariah. Burke is found dead the next morning. Mariah had only recently appeared on the scene claiming claim-ing parentage of Burke. He appears to have accepted her as his daughter. She, like Burke, has high interest in turning the ranch, back to , nature, rather than continuing it as a working ranch; with cattle and crops.' His other children and the neighbors do not have the same goals for the ranch. At the university there are several people with whom Claire works that are resentful resent-ful of her success in bringing in such a valuable collection. The box with the most valuable valu-able books in it is stolen and as Claire searches for information infor-mation on the theft, she realizes this is a much more sinister situation than a box of stolen books. Along with intrigue of the mystery, the author treats us to a panoramic vista of the countryside as Claire travels back and forth looking for her books and trying to settle the combustible will.
