Show Page Two - The Springville Herald - January 1, 2003 FTOTHRTAT JL-JL' JL JL VJLX A-ZL JL Tab tM today to raako (resolutions Today is New Year's Day 2003. Have you made your new year's resolutions? We all make them, thinking we will change. The new year always seems to be a time to start, a time to change and do things better. But it is difficult to change. If you had a hard time losing weight or controlling your temper last year, then you will probably have a hard time losing weight or controlling your temper this coming year. We seem to go in the same direction unless we really work hard at changing. We get used to our old ways. They are comfortable. They may not be good ways, but they are familiar to us. Research says that it takes doing a thing 20 times to make it a habit. It might take some of us a little more, maybe writing the preferred behavior down where we can see it each day, or getting someone to help us with our desire to change something. Today is a great time to make resolutions-to plan to change our not so good ways. Take the time today to reflect on the past year. What were your accomplishments? You might be surprised at what you achieved and what good you did. Then think about the coming year. What do you want to happen this year? How can you make some changes? Take some time today to really think about your life and where it is and make some goals. Along with losing weight and spending less and saving more, we might all write down to resolve to smile more, to give more compliments, to say "thank you" more often. The world around us would be a better place if all of us would make these little things a part of our resolve for 2003. Pay down iM or mii As a general rule, until you reach the ideal situation, you will probably want to strike a balance between paying down debt and building savings. What is the ideal situation? No debt and at least three to five months income in savings. As you work toward that ideal situation, whether you pay down debt or build up savings really depends on the makeup of your financial position. The Credit Union Advocate suggests you will probably want to take the following factors into account: Debt-to-income ratio: Lending institutions and the government view a certain amount of debt as tolerable. Once you've gone beyond this amount, you may be at risk of over extending yourself. your-self. This amount isn't a hard dollar figure, but a percentage of your take-home pay. If much over 40 percent of your take-home take-home income goes toward paying debt, you'll probably find that your credit scores will be low, and you may have trouble meeting meet-ing your obligations. Type of debt: Is your debt long-term or short-term? For example, if you have a $1,000 mortgage payment (long-term debt), it may not be of greatest benefit to pay that down first. After all, if you lose your job, you still have that $1,000 obligation obliga-tion despite paying your debt down. That extra money might be better used in savings in case of an emergency. On the other hand, if your debt is short-term, you can quickly eliminate it by paying extra for a few months, you can free up that much more cash (for savings, possibly) by paying it off as quickly as possible. possi-ble. The money you're paying on your debt is probably more than you can earn by building savings. However, if you are unable to pay down that debt, you may be able to consolidate the high-rate loans into a lower rate. This will lower your monthly payments and allows you to pour more in savings. Beware, though! Th( purpose of consolidation is to get a lower rate, not allow you to take on more debt! If you're paying a rate on your mortgage that is two percent or more higher than the going rate, it may be to your advantage to consider refinancing. refinanc-ing. Remember that what's best for you depends on your situation, and may not be best for another individual. But you should work toward the ideal situation-no debt and at least three to five months of income in your savings. sav-ings. COMMENT Ekalsirs ft (etorafta skulls Dear Friends and Family: I have been blessed again with an incredible opportunity to travel to India, this February, to work with a team of doctors and nurses to bring medical care to the Dalits (historically called the untouchables) in the state of Orissa, south of Calcutta. The Dalits are the lowest group of Indians in India's caste system. For the most part they are denied access to medical care, jobs and education. From an international stand point they are referred to as "the poorest of the poor." After having traveled to a number of third world countries, coun-tries, I was shocked to see the level of poverty and devastation these people suffer. This year our team will be traveling to a different village each day. The villages consist of 1000 to 2000 Indians. These Indians have minimal shelter. They drink and bathe in polluted water. Malnutrition is common. Unfortuately, between 25 percent and 70 percent of all wireless calls to 911 have been accidental, by some estimates, and these calls clog up the phone lines at emergency call centers and even inhibit the dispatch of emergency services to those, actually in need. Accidental 91 1 calls can result from a consumer inadvertently pressing a key on his or her, 1 handset that is automatically programmed to reach 91 1 by way of speed dial. Many older wireless wire-less phones are equipped with this feature, and many came preprogrammed pre-programmed with the feature turned on. In these pre-programmed handsets, holding down one key for a few seconds - generally the "9" - activates the speed dial. The older wireless phones with this feature, especially those with an open-faced design, might bump against an item in the user's purse or pocket, activating the automatic dial without the user even being aware that this is happening. Accidental 911 calls, also known as unintentional 911 calls, Ten worst gimmicks Fat-gobbler pills? Fat-leeching skin patches? Or maybe metabolism metabo-lism boosting products with names like "hyper-meta-phedra-bolic?" Which were the absolute-ly absolute-ly worst diet tips of 2002? According to humor writer Judy Gruen, author of the new book "Til! We Eat Again: Confessions Con-fessions of a Diet Dropout" (Champion Press, $13.95, htt;p:- www. championpress.com), competition was stiff. "With so many awful products and ideas out there, compiling this list was a wrenching process. I needed to have a bowl of ice cream just to clear my head while selecting the finalists." Gruen came up with the list as a result of her research working on "Till We Eat Again." The book, which hits the stores just in time for post-New Year's diet resolutions, is based on Gruen's true adventures with various diet and exercise programs, from belly dancing to Boot Camp and from electronic waist trimmers to Weight Watchers. "As P.T. Barnum famously said, "There's a sucker born every minute,' which is something that people who market diets and diet products understand well indeed." Here, then, are the author's Ten Worst Diet Gimmicks for 2002: - 1. Through advance publicity and word of mouth, long lines of people will be waiting for treatment treat-ment at our temporary village clinics. Last year our 17 member team treated over 1000 patients a day. The mission was a huge success, because of your support and contributions. I am asking again for your thoughts and prayers as I embark on this adventure. I am also asking that you keep the Dalits in your prayers, as there is at this time, considerable persecution against them from Hindu radicals. radi-cals. I need your help to raise $3000 for my share of the trip pose a risk to public safety because be-cause an emergency call center must spend time and resources to determine whether the calls are truly emergencies or merely false alarms. Generally, a public safety operator will stay on the line, or will disconnect and try to call the caller back to verify any emergency. emer-gency. In either case, time that could be devoted to a true emergency emer-gency is wasted, and a life could hang in the balance. "Accidental 911 calls from wireless phones pose a risk to everyone's safety," said K. Dane Snowden, chief of the Consumer & Governmental Affairs Bureau. "Through awareness and education, educa-tion, consumers, carriers, manufacturers, manu-facturers, the government and public safety groups can help to eliminate this problem.", Wireless phone users can prevent accidental 911 calls in several ways. Locking the keypad of a phone prevents accidental calls, as does turning off the automatic 911 feature - your user's manual will explain how. Also, one of the benefits of buying buy-ing a newer handset is that very few of the newer phones have this feature, and if they do, the user has to activate it, so accidental acciden-tal 911 calls are infrequent with the later model handsets.
