Show Page Two - The Springville Herald EDITORIAL Oon'i drive drunk! "It was the first time." that is what the woman said who called the newspaper office to ask that her name be removed from the police report this week. The first time. Does that excuse anyone from driving drunk? Because it was the "first time?" One of the oldest drugs known to man is alcohol. And for years and years there have been laws concerning drinking and driving. One doesn't have to be real smart to know that the two do not mix. News reports daily tell of deaths that occurred because someone choose to drive drunk. The sad thing is that it is usually the drunk driver that survives an accident. Numerous studies have been done on the various effects alcohol has on a person's body. None of them are good. Dutch researchers recently completed a study on the effects of moderate alcohol consumption. It was published by the online edition of the journal "Science" called the "Sciencexpress" and depicts the slowed processes of brain functions due to impaired ability by even smaller amounts of alcohol equal to one drink. Volunteers in the study experienced an error rate of about 4.8 percent on placebo, but after the first drink the errors soared to 9.8 percent. Drinking alcohol also reduced the person's processing speed. Changes in brain action were quickly detected, leading researchers to conclude that even a small amount of alcohol was enough to erode the mind's ability to detect and correct errors. Measures of brain waves showed that the small doses of alcohol quickly affected the anterior cingulate cortex or ACC, a part of the brain that influences thinking processes and the unconscious detection of error. Driving drunk is totally inexcusable! Many thousands of people die on the nation's highways each year as the result of drunk driving. And driver's under the age of 30 account for more than half of all drinking drivers who are killed in automobile crashes. It is hard enough to drive our crowded highways sober. How can anyone even think they can do it when they are drunk? If you have been drinking alcohol, DON'T DRIVE. Have a sober friend drive you home. Or call your parents. Or take a bus. Walk. Do anything but drive. Don't take the chance of getting behind the wheel of a car after drinking. If you see friends who have been drinking, volunteer to drive them to their destination. It is the best thing you can do for a friend. If you see a vehicle that is not being controlled, do not hesitate to call the authorities. A judge in Texas issues bumper stickers to convicted drunk drivers who are repeat offenders or have an unusually high blood alcohol reading. The stickers are required on all vehicles that the drinker might use. The stickers say, "Driving While Intoxicated." Smaller wording on the stickers says that the driver is under county supervision, and if he or she is seen drinking, it should be reported. A phone number is there to call. Do we need to go to that extreme to shame people into not driving while drunk? In a special session of the Utah Legislature in July of this year, legislators passed a measure for a single, statewide database within the Utah Department of Public Safety to store DUI records and data. It will be accessible to all agencies in the state that deal with the DUI problem. People who drink and drive and then do it again and maim or kill, anywhere in the state, will be tracked and punished. It doesn't matter if it is the first time or the tenth time. Alcohol related accidents and crimes actually take more lives than all illegal drugs combined. Social drinking in even moderate amounts can be hazardous, especially when operating a vehicle. Mapleton citizens encouraged to donate foodstuff by Anne Woelkers Mapleton has declared Thursday, Thurs-day, Nov. 21 as Feed America Thursday. This program was introduced to Congress on Oct. 15, 2002, by Senator Orrin Hatch. The program is a request of citizens to skip two meals on Thursday, Nov. 21, and donate the food saved to a local shelter, food kitchen or other anti-hunger charity. "Each day millions of Americans-many of them children-suffer children-suffer from hunger," Hatch said. Before you approve the Department De-partment of Homeland Security designed by the Council on Foreign For-eign Relations before 9-11, with it's designers claiming it as a response to 9-11, let's clear up some questions. Like what was discovered about prior knowledge of our government about 9-11 at the joint House and Senate Intelligence Intel-ligence Committee hearings that just ended in mid-October that shocked so many congressmen? Why aren't we being told? How could FBI Director Mueller deny any prior knowledge knowl-edge of the 9-11 terrorist plot? Does that square with the testimonies testi-monies heard by the congressional congressio-nal inquiry? No!
