Show Paee Two The Cpringville Herald EDITORIAL Mate"! fs' idds! School is opcn--drive carefully. Good advice for every driver, yuung or old. Populations have increased and we have more juung people going to schxI now. Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for children 14 years of age and younger with 2.343 deaths in 20U0. Statistics say that one-fourth of all children who die in these crashes are pedestrians. And one pedestrian is killed every two hours in the United States. Some students walk, some ride bicycles and some take the schtxil bus. In every case, they pose concerns for drivers who may have forgotten school-time safety practices. One school bus driver said that he was appalled at the number of drivers that pass his bus when he is stopped, loading or unloading unload-ing the students. When the red lights are flashing, everybody must stop! And we should give school busses the right of way. Schcxil zones are clearly marked, and most drivers slow down around schools when children are crossing the streets. But all drivers need to think beyond the school zones. Kids dart out into . the street from behind parked vehicles. And they are difficult to see. We need to slow down and be alert. From 1988 to 1998, an average of 31 pedestrians were killed each year while getting on or off school buses, with 23 being struck by a school bus and eight hit by another vehicle. Half of the pedestrian fatalities in schtxl bus-related crashes were children between five and seven years old. Kids on bikes are usually not looking out for cars. They are frequently impulsive and forget that cars also use the road. When you see young people on bicycles, give them plenty of room. And if you have children who are riding bicycles, make sure that they are protected with safety helmets. Head injury is the leading cause of death in bicycle crashes and is the most important determinant of bicycle-related death and permanent disability. Bicycle helmets have been shown to reduce the risk of head injury by as much as 85 percent and reduce the risk of brain injury by as much as 88 percent. Most school-age pedestrians are killed in the afternoon than in the morning, with 41 percent of the fatalities occurring in crashes between 1 and 3 p.m. The same for school bus-related crashes; most occurred when coming home from sch(M)l during daylight hours. We need to pay attention to the school crossing guards also. They are there to protect both children and drivers. The burden is entirely on drivers to be careful whenever children are present. Kids are probably not paying attention to you, but you must pay attention to them. Remember that there is more traffic tcxlay and people drive at higher speeds. Drivers must take special precautions when during school time. Hatch fighting to protect kids from pornography Sen. Orrin G. Hatch (R-Utah), (R-Utah), ranking Republican member mem-ber of the Senate Committee on the Judiciary, today introduced the bipartisan Prosecutorial Remedies Rem-edies and Tools Against the Exploitation of Children Today Act of 2002 ("PROTECT"). "Every decent American joins with me in seeking to rid our country of child pornography," stated Hatch. "Unfortunately, the growth of technology and the rise of the Internet has fkxxled our. nation with it. Child pornography is inherently repulsive, but even more damaging are the purposes ; for which it routinely is used. ; Perverts and pedophiles not only ; use child pornography to whet, ; their sick desires, but also to lure our defenseless children into unspeakable acts of sexual exploitation." exploi-tation." "The Prosecutorial Remedies and Tools Against the Exploitation Exploita-tion of Children Today Act of 2002 ('PROTECT') strikes a necessary balance between the First Amendment and our nation's natio-n's critically important interest in protecting children," continued Hatch. "There is not place for child pornography even in our 81 Iff (USPS 513-060) Published Weekly by Art City Publishing Co., Inc. 161 South Main Street Springville, Utah Publisher Martin W. The PROTECT Act includes the following provisions: - Plugs the loophole that exists today where child pornog-raphers pornog-raphers can escape prosecution by claiming that their sexually explicit material did not actually involve real children by allowing prosecution to proceed when the child pornography includes persons per-sons who appear virtually indistinguishable indis-tinguishable from actual minors. - Prohibits the pandering or solicitation of anything represented represent-ed to be obscene child pornography. pornogra-phy. - Prohibits any depictions of minors, apparent minors, in actual-not simulated-acts of bestiality, sadistic or masochistic abuse, or sexual intercourse, when such depictions lack literary, liter-ary, artistic, political or scientific value. - Beefs up existing record keeping requirements for those who chose to produce sexually explicit materials. - Creates a new civil actin for those aggrieved by the depraved acts of those who violate our child pornography laws. Fire prevention kits online Wildfires have scorched approximately ap-proximately six million acres this year, increasing interest in fire prevention education programs. To meet the demand for classroom class-room programs, a newly developed devel-oped teacher's kit is now available avail-able online. The kits have already been distributed to more than 15,000 schools nationwide. The kit is targeted at students from kindergarten to fifth grade. Its objectives are to educate children ages four to 1 1 about ow wildfires start, how they can prevent a wildfire and to create familiarity and enthusiasm among children about Smokey Bear, his friends and his message about wildfire prevention. The Smokey N'Da Boyz kits were developed by lifetime Learning Lear-ning Systems, Inc. in coordination coordina-tion with the Ad Council, National Nation-al Association of State Foresters and the USDA Forest Service. The program meets the National Science Content Standards in: Life Science (Organisms and Their Environments) and Science in Personal and Social Perspectives Perspec-tives (Types of Resources and Changes in Environments). The kits are free and available to download for teachers andor parents, at Smokey Bear's website web-site www.smokeybear.com. Fasting, em -heal you Editor: I read in yesterday's LA Times that you were scared about the operation on your foot. You have every right to be after getting get-ting three different opinions from the doctors. Arguing doctors do make one anxious. I suggest you get the truth not an opinion. Don't go to alternative medicine. That's still medicine. You need to get the truth outside of medicine medi-cine because they don't have it. Fasting (just drinking water) will get rid of your problem. Should anyone accuse me of practicing medicine without a license I should point out that this is not medicine. Doctors do not use fasting except in a few cases for weight loss. As Herbert Armstrong Arm-strong once wrote in his autobiography, autobi-ography, if more people fasted, doctors would starve. The man who knew most about fasting (I even heard Radio Conssipeipi&s toagpfi Editor: With temperatures blasting thermometers into triple digit range and no measurable precipitation precipi-tation in sight, it is hard to imagine imag-ine we have an iceberg to contend con-tend with. You may not realize it is there, but it sits there shimmering shimmer-ing in all its hidden glory smack dab in the middle of this desert we call Utah. Not since the early 50's has the state endured as long lasting a period of time without measurable measur-able precipitation as it is now experiencing. .Many changes over the past 50 years have worked together to intensify the effects of the current dry period, effects that will most likely be felt for many years to come. Utah Agriculture Commissioner Commission-er Cary Peterson remains optimistic; opti-mistic; "Drought is nothing new to us. We will share what resources re-sources we have, rethink how we do business, and like those who have worked the land before us, look to tomorrow for crop-saving rains." Reloading may not be enough as the long-term problems extend beyond agrarian needs. The dry spells of the 50's, while damaging, pale in comparison compari-son to the problems being met today. Environmental infighting has prevented the thinning of forests through logging and prescribed pre-scribed burns. Throw in development develop-ment along the urban-interface with the drought and you have a multi-faceted problem for the forests. Trees already stressed by unchecked growth are now drying dry-ing out due to lack of water. The trees are no longer able to maintain main-tain their natural defenses against pest and become vulnerable to COMMENT Editor: The apostle Paul wrote: "For such are false apostles, deceitful workers transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of. righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works." (II COR 11:14-16) Satan is the great master of deceit and subterfuge. Calling good evil and evil good is a ploy utilized by Satan. Satan offers a mixture of just enough good . disguise his works of evil. In ', order to accomplish his evil designs here on earth of destroying destroy-ing families. Satan uses organizations organiza-tions which he gives good sound-1 sound-1 ing, appealing and patriotic names like the American Civil Liberties Union. ! Satan would like people to falsely think that the ACLU is an organization for good, but it's covert and nefarious record testifies testi-fies otherwise. Next to Hollywood Holly-wood and the entertainment industry, no affiliate of the Dem-' , ocratSocialistLiberalHedonist Political Party or Satan's left wing "axis of evil" has done ; more to undermine our moral foundations. Pornography in our culture is one of the great threats of Satan to our families and freedom. By its actions, the ACLU has been one of the fore Moscow mention him during the Cold .War) was Herbert Shelton. He's dead but his book is alive, "Fasting Can Save Your Life." I have a copy and it's the only one you need to read to get back to health. I have many others. He'll tell you, and it's so true, that doctors don't heal. They ' treat effects but not the causes. They will scrape your bone spurs, but that won't stop them from coming back and as the article said, might not even relieve re-lieve the pain. Just like they can ' cut out cancer, but that doesn't . stop it from growing back. King David once said how "wondrously our bodies have been made. We don't know the half of . it. Our bodies are self-healing in " most cases. God created that. But ! most people do not use the physi-'cal physi-'cal way to heal-fasting, just as they don't use the spiritual way infestation. The dry trees, which . have been and will be attacked by these pests, now become kindling for any kind of fire. Again, this is till me tip of the iceberg. The grasses and shrubs which cattle, sheep and wildlife use to graze on are virtually nonexistent due to the drought. What forage and browse the animals can find is mostly the remnants of last year's growth and is nothing more than fuel for potential fires. Ranchers are selling off their livestock in an effort to head off starvation. The wild animals that roam freely in the mountains and plains will be headed into winter ill-prepared for what lies ahead. Many will starve to death, others will be forced into urban areas in search of food. These issues still just mask the underlying and long-term problems. Bear and mountain lion will wander into human-populated areas in search of food. The bear cub population this season is almost certainly going to be lost. Deer and elk herds have already calved but the young will be lost either to the sparse diet of their mothers or the lack of forage for themselves. We have all heard the water woes, but these still waters also run much deeper. Already hydroelectric hydro-electric power generation in the state has been cut in half due to the low flows. Thirsty municipalities municipal-ities are seeing their wells dry up and are trying to tap into conservation conser-vation pools necessary for the survival of fish. Are we sailing the Titanic unknowingly into this iceberg? We hope not. Land and wildlife managers are working tirelessly most purveyors and defenders of pornography upon our society. The outstanding moral Chris-: tian writer George Grant writing about the ACLU comments: "Even taking into consideration the organization's cozy and lucrative lucra-tive relationship with the Playboy Foundation, its advocacy of such concupiscent causes is difficult to fathom. Who but the ACLU could actually defend child pornography? por-nography? Or brutal and demeaning demean-ing violent pornography? Or the relaxation of health precautions in the midst of the AIDs plague? Or further exacerbation of the teen pregnancy epidemic? Or the complete legalization and deregulation deregu-lation of prostitution? Even the most libertine and leftist politicos recognize that such nefarious depravity is detrimental to the nation's vitality.... The legal commitment of the ACLU to the fanatically twisted fringe of American Ame-rican culture-pornographers, gay activists, abortionists and other sexpert liberationist-is a pathetically patheti-cally self-defeating crusade that has confused liberty with license." li-cense." Former California State Senator Sena-tor John Harmer in his revealing book on pornography titled: "A War We Must Win," writes: "Even more duplicitous and deceitful has been the continued assertion by the allies of - the pornographer-the Motion Picture Association of America, the ACLU and the slick magazine publishers-that pornography is to heal, a miracle because Jesus Christ was beaten beyond recognition recog-nition so we could be healed. He paid the price. He designed the human body. Doctors have not had anything to do with that but you would think they have by the sums of money they collect-a trillion dollars a year in this country alone and we're sicker than ever because we go to them and their god, thus breaking the First Commandment and being cursed for it. So do yourself a very big favor Shaq. Read the book on fasting for health. If you have any questions I can give you answers FREE. Check my page on the web for my email address, http:eli3.tripod.com I must tell you that Shelton had weird nutritional nutri-tional ideas as does the Natural Hygiene Society today. They are vegetarians and only eat their food raw. It's just a little tag in an effort to limit the damage. Special hunts have been ordered to help thin the elk and deer herds ravaged by the drought. The daily limit on fish has been increased in an attempt to fend off problems. Restrictions have been placed on the use of fire and fireworks. Emergency declarations declara-tions have been made to help farmers and ranchers to try to salvage their crops and livestock. Energy and water conservation efforts are lead items on television televi-sion and newspapers. These efforts are the best bandage we can offer at this time. But what does the future hold for the state? Can we allow the potential fire fuels to grow unchecked, leading to larger and more devastating fires, or can we manage the vegetation to achieve a more harmonious situation? Can we allow the wildland urban interface to continue its rapid growth without suffering the costs of additional fire suppres-. sion? Can we adequately meet the water needs for not only human consumption but also for wildlife and livestock? Utah is mostly a desert; planning plan-ning and conservation efforts much not be mounted just in time of crisis, but all the time. A few lifestyle changes and with proper management of our natural resources, re-sources, we can weather this storm and many others that may follow, allowing smooth sailing around hidden obstacles. Joel Frandsen Utah State Forester Director Division of F orestry Fire and State Lands PAGE neither harmful nor is there any . evidence . that pornography has any Causal relationship to antisocial antiso-cial behavior. The parents of those thousands thou-sands of boys and girls who have been raped, tortured and in many cases murdered by individuals addicted to and crazed by pornography, por-nography, are not to be considered consid-ered as "reliable" witnesses concerning con-cerning what tragedy inevitably follows the pornography addict's path into degeneracy." , In the name of civil liberties (a facade or cover for it's true agenda) the ACLU has pressed forward a radical agenda of moral corruption and ethical degeneration. The ACLU advocates advo-cates a particular world view. It is the world view of secular humanism-Satan's opposite of Christianity. The ACLU is also the main legal branch of Satan's left-wing axis of evil. With Satan and his left-wing . axis of evil working overtime to destroy our families and morals, is it any wonder that President Gordon B. Hinckley of the LDS Church said at the October 2001 General Conference: "We live in a season of wickedness, pornography, pornog-raphy, immorality. All the sins of Sodom and Gomorrah haunt our society. Our young people have never faced a greater challenge. We have never seen more clearly the lecher-our face of evil." Art Larson Springville added by Big Brother to discourage discour-age fasting. Of course God knows we can eat meat. That's why he made laws concerning clean and unclean meat.
