Show Gardner Produce to start selling Page Ten - The Springville Herald - July 5, 2000 Gardner Produce is the longest lon-gest continuously selling roadside produce market in Utah County. A family owned and operated business in Spanish Fork and Salem, it is run by Carole, Mike and Alan Gardner. In the nineteen fifties, Alan and his father, Archie, grew and sold sweet corn to the Del Monte Canning Factory. Townspeople bought their canning corn from the trucks delivering sweet corn to the factory. With the closing of the factory, the Gardners took orders from friends in town, supplying sweet corn for eating and canning needs. In 1959, Gardners opened their first stand at 600 S. Main, in Spanish Fork, in the driveway of Alan's father's home. The Gardner family raised, picked and sold all their produce as a family business to supplement their family income. In forty plus years, the produce pro-duce business has evolved from eight acres of sweet corn to nearly ninety acres. In the early sixties, most corn sales were from five to ten dozen ears for canning. Most customers bought only two or three purchases pur-chases a season. Today, many customers buy two to four ears per day, every day cr several times per week. During the nineteen sixties, the stand opened in early August, and few people bought sweet corn after Labor Day. This year, the sales season will extend from early July until almost November, Novem-ber, or until heavy frost stops the corn growth. Gardner Produce sells sweet corn, tomatoes, squash, melons, apples, pumpkins and other seasonal sea-sonal produce. For special orders call: 798-2119. Gardner Produce sells from two main stands, one at Zee-man's Zee-man's Family Sports, 850 N. Main, Spanish Fork and one at the Salem Chevron in Salem. Gardners also have a third produce pro-duce stand in Keber City. The produce delivered to their customers is the freshest produce possible. By keeping the number of stands and acres down, better ."tod' fresher produce can be delivered'. deliv-ered'. Jean will share some of her stories and teach the children how to make their own papier-mache papier-mache critter friends. It is very important impor-tant that sweet corn purchased by customers at five in the afternoon is as freshly picked as the corn purchased in the morning. Many customers say Gardner's Gard-ner's sweet corn is the best tasting tast-ing corn in the state. More important im-portant than the variety (Peaches and Cream), freshness is the most important single ingredient in the taste of sweet corn. Working customers, who come home after five in the afternoon arc greatly valued. Gardner produce stands are open from eight in the morning until eight in the evening, six days per week. Customers find the sales people are very helpful, cheerful and courteous. Many customers value and praise the sales personnel person-nel as often as they praise the produce being sold.
