Show Page Twelve - The Springville Herald - March 18, 1998 SPORTS fhy the by Ward Figge I love the game. What a sight to see a bunch of kids, on a warm spring day, tearing the leather off a baseball. The pitcher steps to the mound, wipes the sweat off his brow, then grips the ball with his knuckles to the most wicked pitch this side of the county. The catcher talks it up behind the plate. The batter, looking fast ball, swings and misses. The runner on first tries to steal second, but as the dust clears, the umpire exclaims "you'er out!" Center field catches one near the fence then crow hops to make the throw that holds the man on third. The big slugger lays a graceful bunt down the first baseline that scores the winning run. That's sports. If you've been led to believe that disrespecting coaches, yelling at officials and chasing big money mon-ey shoe contracts is what sports are about, then you need to take new look at an old pass time. Visit a ballpark where the crack of a bat can still be heard and the you'll see what it's all about. It's bout those who - "play the game." So few play the game. Playing the game is about competition, long practices, hard practices, conditioning, dedication, team work, initiative, drive, leadership, leader-ship, submission, inspiration, strategy, vision, preparation, planning, goals, friendship, sportsmanship, sport-smanship, high fives, laughter, fun, consoling, compassion, IT I - , Tf I " : ' I - 1 Ward Figge passion, confidence, maturity, boldness, humility, responding to adversity, pain, never giving up, attitude, winning, defeat, offense, defense, respect, authority, mentoring, ment-oring, being a hero, self discipline, disci-pline, self respect, selflessness and heart. The list goes on. Without these - there is no game. There is merely an event. These are also the things of life. People who practice these, will always be players. This spring, turn off the "game" of the week and head for the ballpark. Soak in the smells of spring and the sight and sounds of baseball. Take a new look at sports. Players will emerge from the batting cage in the basement, to the backstop on the ball field. Players who love the game. Players who have worked hard for the right to dig their cleats into the red clay.. Players who can inspire us all. Athletes who - "play the game." V t . "Don't leave food for your dog or cat out overnight," advises Mike Fowlks, conservation officer offi-cer with the Division of Wildlife Resources. "It's an open invitation invita-tion for raccoons and skunks to feed. " Fowlks explained that raccoons rac-coons and skunks are nocturnal, meaning they feed at night. Food left out overnight for your dog or cat is an open invitation for ' raccoons and skunks to visit your ' house. It doesn't take long, Fowlks said, before raccoons and skunks decide your home's overnight food source makes it a good place to take up residence. Your wood shed, chimney or basement are all places the critters may decide to live. Each year the division receives re-ceives numerous calls from people peo-ple wanting to know how to rid their residence of raccoons and skunks. "By not leaving food for your dog or cat out overnight, you've done a lot to prevent these problems," prob-lems," Fowlks said.
