You wonder won-der if you heard correctly, "How can I exercise with this pain?" Exercise is fast becoming the treatment of choice to help those who suffer low back pain and is challenging other traditional treatments like bed rest, drugs, heat packs, braces and surgery. In the past, people suffering from back pain were instructed to "go home and rest," but research now indicates that bed rest has caused problems from increased pain to depression. While over the past few years there has been increasing increas-ing evidence that if something is injured and you start to slowly move it under controlled conditions, condi-tions, the structure heals quicker and better. This is true of muscles, mus-cles, bones, ligaments and cartilage. carti-lage. Interestingly, orthopedic surgeons now minimize the use of casts and immobilizes in favor of early, controlled exercise to decrease pain, joint stiffness and muscle atrophy. The message for those people suffering from back pain is that you will fare better exercising under controlled conditions, con-ditions, even if it is initially uncomfortable. Instruction in the proper exercise program is done by a physical therapist trained to evaluate and prescribe exercises appropriate for the specific individual. indi-vidual. Not all back problems can be treated with exercise alone. Joe Montana, ihe star quarterback of the San Francisco 49ers, was evaluated after his injury and physicians recommended surgery. However, a vigorous exercise program was begun prior to surgery and afterwards to prepare him to return to professional football. In connection with an exercise program, a Back School can provide education on the spine, beneficial body mechanics, proper prop-er posture, etc. The Back School takes a fresh look at preventing back injuries from occurring or recurring. Most back problems can be prevented, and effective education is the key. ' Exercise and education pro- -grams invite back pain sufferers1 to take an active role in their, recovery and emphasizes the ultimate responsibility for the management of back pain is with the individual. While each patient needs individual consideration the ; consensus is that exercise and education is a vital part in the overall success in rehabilitation and prevention of back pain. For more information on how an exercise program or Back School would benefit you or your , company, call your nearest physi-" cal therapy office. American health Older and fatter; that's the sad state of American health in the 1990s. Despite all the exercising we do and the low-fat foods on the market, we're fatter than ever. Take a look at the percentage percent-age of overweight Americans today compared to 20 years ago: Age 1971 1991 20-34 16 23 35-44 28 36 45-54 30 39 55-64 32 44 The 1848 presidential election was the first to be held at the same time in all the states. u d Couple to marry in Provo Temple Announcement is made by Jesus Guillermo and Yolanda Ruiz Martinez of Provo of the engagement of their daughter, Alma Patricia, to Mr. Terry Kay Ekker, son of John Gerrit Ekker of Springville and the late Kaye Kendall Ekker.
