Show SHS Wrestling The wrestling team has come off of the holiday break in great shape. They traveled to the Bear River Tourney last Saturday and 'represented Springville with a winning style. As a team, they placed third in the nine-team tournament. The Devil Matmen had more first place finishers than any of the other schools that attended the tourney, and those champions were John Deveraux, Mike Robinson and Karlin Smith. :In the junior varsity tourney it was Greg Robinson. There are several others that placed in the tourney showing that there is a "Rippin Red Rage". This week the team faces Cedar City in regional action in a home dual meet on Thursday, and Saturday they travel to the American Ameri-can Fork tourney. Parents and students are encouraged en-couraged to support the team and cheer them on in these important matches. The outstanding Varsity Wrestler Wres-tler of the Week was Karlin Smith. Karlin pinned his man in the championship match. This is the second time he has earned this honor. That shows what kind of team leader this co-captain is. Congratulations Karlin! The outstanding Junior Varsity Wrestler of the Week was Ryan Livingston. He wrestled with all his heart in the tourney and placed second. Ryan is starting to believe in himselt and he will have several more wins this season. Keep up the good work Ryan! Hunter's safety Hunter's Safety classes will begin in the choir room (A-2) at Springville High School on January Janu-ary 14, at 7 p.m. It will be held for six nights including January 14, 16, 21, 23, 28 and 30. The class is held each night for two and one-half hours ending at 9;30 P-m. - The fee of $0 includes "all materials, shooting, ammunition and etc. Registration will be held the1 first night. Students need to bring $10, their birth date, social security secu-rity number, correct address and phone number. J8 Puppetry Beginning January 8, puppetry classes will be offered at the Peteetneet Academy of the Arts in Payson, as well as at the Children's Child-ren's Keep Theater in Provo. Puppetry as an ancient art form that is still popular with both children and adults. Puppets have been used in a variety of ways and for many purposes including: teaching, storytelling, disciplining, disciplin-ing, developing creativity, developing devel-oping social skills and developing language skills. The classes will be geared to offer age-appropriate instruction in these areas. Classes will be taught by Rosemarie Howard and Shiela Heindel, both graduates of Brig-ham Brig-ham Young University with masters degrees in child drama. The following classes will be taught Wednesday evening in Provo and Thursday evening in Payson for eight weeks: 6 to 8 year olds, 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.; 9 and up, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.; and adult, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Each class will be limited to 10 students. During the eight-week eight-week period students will work together in small groups to: 1) create a puppet script based on a fairy or folktale, 2) create at least two different kinds of puppets, 3) create a character for each puppet, pup-pet, and 4) perform the stories they have created. Families and friends will be invited to an informal infor-mal performance during the final class to see the results of the student efforts. He spoke about his trip to China in conjunction with building a new power plant there. He also showed slides of the event. Toastmaster was Calvin Bird, left. This week's meeting will be held Thursday and will be honoring past Kiwanis Presidents on the 75th anniversary of the club here in Springville. Toastmaster will be Cliff Crandall. OBITUARIES Leo LeGrande Stir-land, Stir-land, 85, of Springville, died Jan. 2, 1992, at his home following a heart attack. He was born June 12, 1906 in Providence to Thomas and Rosina Schenk Stirland. He married mar-ried Beatrice Campbell, June 27, 1928, in the Logan LDS Temple. She died in 1957. He married Helen Tew Gutke, Sept. 27, 1958, at the New York City Mission Home. He was raised in Providence and attended schools there. He also attended Utah State University Uni-versity and Cornell University. Uni-versity. He was an active member of the LDS Church and had been a past branch president. He James E. Wiscombe, 53, of Mapleton, died Dec. 31, 1991, at his home of cancer. He was born March 21, 1938, in Mapleton, to J. Elmer and Mary Johnson John-son Wiscombev He married mar-ried Suzanne Strong, Feb 2, 1961 in the Manti LDS Temple. He was raised in Mapleton and attended schools in Mapleton and Springville. He graduated from Brigham Young University. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1957 to 1960 in the Far East. He was an active member of the LDS Church and had served in many positions. He was presently a High Priest in his ward. After graduating from college he was employed by J.R. Simplol in Idaho, and later by Swifts in Loris Snelson Soller Loris Snelson Soller, of LaCrosse, WI, formerly of Springville, died Jan. 4, 1992 of a stroke. She was born Dec. 31, 1914 in Springville to Ralph and Bela Ballantyne Snelson. She attended schools in Springville, graduating from Springville High School. She later worked at Sutton and Kelley's Cafe in Provo for many years. She was married to Max Huntington of Springville, Spr-ingville, who preceded her of the Jim Wiscombe family, may we express our deep gratitude to the people who have helped in any way at the passing of our beloved husband, father, brother, and grandfather. To our many friends neighbors, and relatives- we extend our heartfelt appreciation, to all of you. We shall never forget your kindness, love, and comfort in our times of sorrow. Leo Stirland retired from DuPont Chemical Company in Wilmington, DE, after 34 years of service, he started as a salesman in 1937 and was a product manager over agricultural chemicals at his retirement. He and his wife had been temple workers in the Provo Temple for the past nine years. He enjoyed reading and gardening. He is survived by his wife of Springville; four daughters: BarDee Bond, Marietta, OH; Carolyn Marsh Lindsay, Rochester, NY; Janet Gutke Hargett, Springville; Patricia Lee Stirland, Salt Lake City; 1 1 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers and one sister, Byron J. Stirland, Burley, James Wiscombe Ogden. When he returned to Mapleton, he was employed em-ployed in road construction, construc-tion, and at the time of his death he was a superintendent superinten-dent for Valley Asphalt. In 1989 he received recognition recogni-tion from the Associated General Contractors, as outstanding superintendent of the year. He enjoyed gardening and horseback riding. He was an avid BYU fan. He is survived by his wife, Mapleton; five sons and one daughter; David Wiscombe, Clark Wiscombe, Wis-combe, both Mapleton; Scott Wiscombe, Spanish Fork; Gary Wiscombe, Springville; Brent Wiscombe, Wis-combe, Orem; Amy Bond, Logan; seven grandchildren; grandchil-dren; his father and stepmother, step-mother, Elmer and Naome Wiscombe, Mapleton; one brother and four sisters; Stephen Wiscombe, Map in death. She later married Art Soller who died in 1986. She is survived by two sons, Phillip A. Soller, Owatonna, MN and Richard Rich-ard Soller, Onalaska, WI; one sister, Donna S. Hut-chings; Hut-chings; two brothers, Ralph J. and Keith Snelson and her step-mother, Faye S. Ward, all of Springville. Spring-ville. Funeral services were held in LaCrosse Tuesday.
