Our veins push btood up towards the heart using one-way valves. If these valves break, blood backs up and makes the veins bulge, causing what is known as varicose vein. About 20 percent of adults will get varicose veins, and they are five times more common in women. Most arc first seen after the age of 20, and are frequently seen after pregnancy. Risks Varicosities are seen with known family history, female Lookinq Back For thine by Lot's Wife There can be something charming char-ming about a two-year-old's selfishness. self-ishness. At least in retrospect I have an old picture of my then two-year-old daughter. Her face is covered in mud and she's smirking smirk-ing up at the camera. I remember her self absorption as frustrating but funny. Her open-hearted denial of the rights of others was so completely frank. She would battle her brother for hours over the possession of even a single crayon. Teenagers have some of that same "terrible two" about them also. I tried to remember during these childhood spells that my children were learning to assert their individuality and that it was part of the natural process of growing. Humiliating and destroying destroy-ing me was just an added bonus, so to speak. I'm often amazed by the pull of selfish people. In teaching kids in Sunday School, sometimes I've seen one little manipulator convince con-vince an entire classroom of intelligent intel-ligent peers that their needs must be met or else. A selfish kid can make everyone so miserable that you would think others would be able to see through them and resist but they often don't As adults, we also occasionally fall for the same thing. A person who acts like a two year old will dominate a neighborhood with their selfish demands. They humiliate humil-iate those who don't control their children, dogs, cats, yards, or personal noises to their satisfaction. satisfac-tion. Often this person will slander slan-der others freely with the label of selfishness without considering their own contribution to the problem. We used to have a guy like that in our neighborhood, and there was general rejoicing and a noticeable rise in everyone's comfort com-fort level when he left My aunt says that selfish women wom-en always get the great guys. I don't know if this is scientifically true, but if you look around, lots of times you'll see these really nice men married to absolute personality trolls. Maybe it happens hap-pens in the reverse more often, I haven't got a poll on this. You probably have an opinion on this yourself if you're married. It seems that unselfishness doesn't pay off sometimes. One time when my dad was older and had started losing his memory, he and my mom were just getting to sleep about 11 at night when there was a knock on the door. When my dad went to answer it there was a young man that he had worked with as a volunteer in an organization that helped kids get off of drugs. This young man asked my dad for a couple hundred dollars and when he said he didn't have it, the young man hit him over the head and ran off. I always have a picture of my dad standing at the door smiling at this kid because that was the kind of person he was. He always wanted to help. Why do we feel like we've been hit over the head sometimes when we're trying to be unselfish? I've been thinking about some of the "self buzz words we hear all the time: self-esteem, self-preser-vation,self-awareness,self-absorp-tion, selfishness. This relationship with ourselves seems to be a diffi cult one. The difficulty is in deciding decid-ing when we need to preserve ourselves, be out own "terrible two" to protect ourselves and give ourselves time to grow just as the teenager and the toddler protect and assert themselves with their self-centered ness; and deciding when we need to be an adult and open our doors to others at the risk of being hit on the head for Herald - July 17, 1991 Health Care vain? hormones, especially the high levels seen in pregnancy, damage to the veins from surgery, infections, infec-tions, or severe bruising, or increased in-creased pressure from above, like that seen in obesity or pregnancy. Are these varicose veins? . Most varicose veins don't cause symptoms, but are unsightly. A patient may feel a feeling of heaviness in their legs, aching or fatigue, and in the worse cases, swelling. A simple way to test for varicose veins is to elevate your legs. This will result in rapid and impressive relief of symptoms. Complications of varicose veins include darkening of the skin, dryness, swelling, areas of hardness, hard-ness, and even open sores. This usually means the damage s extensive. Treatment Varicosities are usually initially treated with compression stockings stock-ings and elevating the feet at night If this doesn't work, or the veins are cosmetically unaccept- own self? our willingness. Life is like going to Chuck-a-Rama when you're on a diet You just take a bite of the shrimp salad because even if it's your favorite, it's got too much mayonnaise mayon-naise and it's not good for you. But the things that fit in your diet like carrot sticks and cherry tomatoes toma-toes and radish roses you can take lots of because they're good for you. When something is good for us, we can take lots of it All the little unselfish things we do that can fit into our lives are good for us-like usually forgiving our dumb, mean neighbors, or not taking offense where none is meant or taking soup to sick people we can't stand. But when our goodness isn't good for us, when being unselfish starts to hurt our own lives, then sometimes we have to take a smaller portion of that because we need to take care of ourselves or we wont' be able to help anyone else. Not that I'm not all for giving your life for the benefit our man-kind-butlife is also not like going to Chuck-a-Rama in that you don't get to come back as many times as you want. You just get to fill your plate on the one trip. ttend and Support Draw nearer to God S He will draw nearer to you. Sclerotherapy. This is done by injecting a solution into the vein which makes the inside collapse col-lapse and stick to itself like a ribbon. With larger veins com- ! session stockings muse be worn or weeks to months for this to be successful. 2. Surgery. Vems can be surgically surgi-cally stripped. This is done by making small incisions about every ev-ery 3 to 4 inches and removing the veins piece by piece. Scarring is usually minimal. 3. Spider veins. These are very tiny veins that branch out like a small tree. These can be treated with Sclerotherapy using very small needles. Results are usually excellent Varicosities come by no conscious con-scious choice, and are the result of positive family history, pregnancy preg-nancy or trauma to your lower legs. The good news is that they can be treated, conservatively with compression stockings and elevating elevat-ing the legs, or by your family doctor who can direct you to someone who has been specially trained to remove varicose veins permanently.
