Show Page Six - The Springville Herald - March 20, 1991 Looking Back Teaching moments by Lot's Wife My husband is really big on this phrase: "teaching moments". mo-ments". It's mainly because he's never at home long enough to find out what one is. It's the kind of thing you usually read in articles by people when they get in those "milk and sugar cookie" and "let's all go fishing' together" moods about home life. You've read those, haven't you? They have them in Reader's Rea-der's Digest all the time. Some person writes in and tells this wonderful story about how their mom changed their life, and you sit and wonder what the heck are your kids ever going to say if they decide to write in to Reader's Digest? The title of my kids' article is going to be "Mother from Hell Targets Children as Victims." But enough about me what about you? What are your teaching moments like? "The dappled sunlight fell upon his golden head, and he lifted a freckled face towards me with an innocent smile. I said to him gently, 'This, my darling, is the meaning of all life. Never forget for-get what I've told you here today and you will always be happy.'" That's what YOUR teaching moments are like, right? I was sure they were. So many people's are. After some thought, I've come up with some scenarios about what teaching moments are actually like. The first one is when you're finally completely com-pletely sick and disgusted with something your kids are doing. For example, they've been fighting for ten days straight and nothing seems to be stopping stop-ping it, and you finally blow ft cork and sit them down ana say, "This is it. Either you guys quit fighting or I'm taking your college money and moving mov-ing somewhere and changing my name and you'll never hear from me again." THAT'S what a real teaching moment sounds like. Those little teaching moments. mo-ments. They're like 1 it tie jiggles jig-gles that realign your status as Another special teaching moment is when you get all the kids all together in a restaurant or in the car, and you get to lecture them about your views on life. The usual response to these is the Withering Look, the Deep Sigh, the Glazed Stare Out the Window, all time-honored parts of the Children's Code of Response to Teaching Moments. Of course, you feel badly about lecturing. All of us remember re-member being a squirmy, little kid just dying to get away from this huge, droning parent person. Most of us feel that way sitting in church. But that's why lectures were invented. They're a traditional way to impart serious information. informa-tion. A certain controlled amount of lecturing makes a kid feel that comfortable scorn that he should have for the older generation. That's how they get that certainty that 1 they're never going to do what you did. They know because they see how stupid you are. That's the real teaching mo- ; ment. A young person has to "know it all" or they're not really young any more. It's when you're old and dumb that , you can start to lecture so j vmc rtin if nniir o i rv ilaii niiuvv i l iii. In fact, it's a good idea often to just take mental trips through everyone they know and point out how miserable they really are and why. Of course, they will probably use this newfound new-found discrimination on you, and heaven knows, kids are discriminating enough when it comes to seeing their parents' faults, but it might be worth a try- The last teaching moment I see regularly is the Great Idea. That's when you say, "OK, from now on we're all going to get right up and get our beds made and be in here for breakfast break-fast with a smile on our faces by 7:30!! That shouldn't be too bad, should it?" Naturally, on the first day of the new plan, you get up at 7:25 feeling like warmed over creamed tuna, and the kids are already watching cartoons in their pajamas and your husband's left for work and.... For several years the congregation of Springville Community Presbyterian Pres-byterian Church has studied the meaning and celebrated the joy of Easter by participating in three ceremonies on the front lawn of their church. On Palm Sunday, in memory memo-ry of Jesus' triumphant entry into Jerusalem and to foretell of what is to come, they set up a rugged wooden cross. On Maundy, Thursday, in memory of the darkness felt at the Last Supper shared by Jesus Je-sus and his disciples, they cover cov-er the cross with black crepe cloth. The cross remains covered cov-ered with the funeral shroud on Good Friday because Jesus Christ suffered under Pontius Pilate and was crucified and buried. On Easter morning, with joy, they decorate the cross with flowers for the resurrection resurrec-tion of Jesus Christ the Savior.
