Show Page Eight - The Springville Herald lowery Continued from page 1 The girl he flirted with was Maurine Gore, daughter of Springville grocer, A.B. Gore. A cadet in the Nurse Corps, she was also a volunteer worker work-er at the USO and was on her way to a dance there when she encountered Lowery. Following the war, Lowery returned to Kansas City to live, but soon missed the mountains and Maurine. He found work in Salt Lake City, and in September Sep-tember of 1946, he and Maurine were married. She was still in the nurse corps which complicated the marriage. "I had go get special permission to marry him. Our regulations wouldn't allow marriage," she said. Lower y's first job was with the Veteran's Administration. Later, he worked at the Tooele Army Depot, then he quit and went full time to the University Universi-ty of Utah. "He got his degree in three years instead of the usual four," his wife reports. "He was working at a dry-cleaners dry-cleaners while he went to school." During this busy period peri-od of time, the young couple ;also had the first of four children. chil-dren. Maurine was working at ithc hospital and Lowery en-, en-, joyed tending and becoming acquainted with his new daughter. With his degree in Sociology earned, Lowery brought his family to Springville and startled start-led his career in the old fronton works plant, "f worked there until they closed it down" (in the early 195()'s) then I went to work in the accounting department depart-ment at Geneva Steel." Lowery retired from Geneva in 1980. Although Lowery claims photography is only a hobby with him, he has probably put in as many hours taking and developing pictures as he did during the 30 years he worked for Geneva. It all started in high school. "I had an Agatha P D 16 box camera." Lowery was fascinated with photography, and through the years, studied ;the art of picture taking and ;bought new equipment. His wife said of his picture taking habits, "When you went On a date with him, you had your picture taken. If you didn't did-n't want it done, he took it anyway. The camera was just an extension of his arm." The many years of volunteer volun-teer service he has rendered began when his sons became active in sports. "My kid played baseball with Trace Christensen 30 years ago. I put in time taking team and individual indi-vidual pictures. Pony League, Colt League, action shots. I got involved with youth football, then moved up to the high school activities. This brief summary doesn't begin to cover the multitude of activities that have been photographed pho-tographed by Lowery. Civic events, weddings, races, band activities, parades, yearbook pictures, you name it, and Lowery was there with his camera. "I've covered Easter Egg Hunts, cheerleaders, the wrestling teams, swim teams, dance groups and Santa Claus. Whcncwf anyone wanted a picture taken, I would lake it." : Tucked away in his storage 'areas are over two generations of events that have taken place in Springville. "My goal is to take every picture that can be taken," he says. "I just like to 4akc pictures, ff someone sees 'me without a camera, they think something is wrong." While Lowery loves to lake pictures, his basic aim in being involved with the youth stemmed from his desire to help. This was the early sixties and long hair, pot smoking, the sexual revolution, and rock and roll were just starting. "When my children were going through school, the school and teenagers in general were getting a bad name. There was a lot of bad publicity, but nothing positive. I wanted to show the good side of what was going on." Lowery has done a tremendous job of showing the positive side of things. He has increased his field of activities far beyond the youth ball games he started with. He has given much time to civic concerns, and has photographed photo-graphed events with the Rotary Club as well as helping any individual or group who want cd pictures taken. One of his rotary club photographs won a photo contest on the national level. His volunteer efforts in photography go back at least 25 years and span more than two generations. He still believes in the same philosophy he began with. He believes firmly that youth need to be encouraged, and the positive pos-itive things they do should be shown. Early in his own education, edu-cation, he ran across a statement state-ment that has helped shape his life. The statement is, "As the kids in school go, so goes the town." Lowery is committed to do all he can to make sure the kids in school and the town are going in the right direction. Although he is recovering from four bypass operations and has failed somewhat in health, he looks forward to even more activities to photograph. photo-graph. "I still plan to attend local high school games and take pictures. 1 take them for me. If I like the picture, I lake it. If someone else wants a picture, I will give it to them." The Lowerys have en joyed their life in Springville. In spite c of spending most of his youth in Missouri, Lowery loves the mountains and the area. As much as he has given the lown and residents through his volunteer activities, he still feels he has gotten much more than he has given.
