Show Page Six - The Springville Herald - February 6, 1991 SPORTS Jr. High wrestling program successful The Springvillc Jr. High Wrestling Team recently completed com-pleted a fairly successful season sea-son with a series of tournaments tourna-ments and dual meets. "We are still in a transition stage of our program's development, devel-opment, and hopefully, within three or four years, we can compete well with the better programs around the slate," said their coach. "We've had some 'veteran' wrestlers return and experience has brought them some good success. We also have had some great success with fint-ycar kids as well. However, I'm most impressed im-pressed by those first or second year kids that haven't seen a lot of success. These kids are fighters and hung in there to the end. It's human nature to lay down and die or quit when things don't happen the way you wish. ..but our kids didn't. These are the type of kids that will be champions in the struggles strug-gles of life whether they're champions on the mat or not. It lakes a special kind of kid to be a wrestler. Everyone can play a team sport, but the 'individual' sports are those that help kids grow and mature in ways that team sports can't. It's one on one, head to head, aggressive competition out there, and there's no one but yourself to credit or blame for mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmji mu 1 ! " 'v I ' pi s Jared Balser your successes or failures. This makes for 'higher' highs and 'lower' lows. This emotional roller coaster will either kill a kid or make him tough." This y ear the boys participated partici-pated in tournaments in Spanish Span-ish Fork, Nephi and Payson. As a team, they placed third in Spanish Fork and second at Nephi. In addition, several boys participated in the annual state tournament at Payson, where Jared Balser placed second, sec-ond, 115 lb. class, in a tournament tourna-ment that featured all of the heavy-weight, premiere wrestling wres-tling programs in the slate as well as a couple of state teams. Wrestling at skis The Springvillc High School Wrestling Team is taking five grapplers to the state tournament tourna-ment this week. The coaches are excited for these young men and wish them the best of luck in the tourney. They arc: Brady Balser, John Dcvereaux, Paul Harmer, Carlin Smith and Todd Jackson. The coaches say they all have the ability to take first in their respective weight class. Congratulations and good luck this week. This week's outstanding varsity wrestlers are Paul Harmer Har-mer and John Dcvereaux. These two both placed first in last week's regional tournament in Spanish Fork. Both of these men have received this award before, and these men are real leaders for the team. Congratulations Congratu-lations John and Paul! The JV Wrestler of the Week is Craig Lambert. Craig went to the regional tourney and wrestled hard and had some victories. Craig is a good athlete and we wish we had him coming back next year. Darren Walker, son of Ken and Deanne Walker of Springville, signed this morning to play 'football next year at the University Uni-versity of Utah. Darren received re-ceived honors past this year for his football performance being selected as Region Eight's Most Valuable Player. He was also on the Tribune and Deseret News All State and All Star Teams for 1990. Coach Bills said, "Darren is probably the best athlete on the line. He is the only one that goes both ways for Springville." Congratulations Darren! In medieval times, church bells were rung in attempt to stop storms. In 1610 Captain Samuel Argall was blown off course near a cape on our eastern seaboard. He immediately named it for his sponsor, Lord De La Warr. It became the State of Delaware.
