It was loaded with our lunch, boxes of ammunition, am-munition, extra socks, dogfood, and an old engine block out of a John Deere tractor. "Why do you force me to go with you?" "I'll tell you later," Parnell said. He crammed bullets the size of corn cobs into his shotgun. "Right now, don't spoil the mood. Let's go." He started away, leaving the pack for me to carry. I smiled and shook my head. "Sorry," I said. "But I'm not carrying this thing. It weighs more than Brenda's mother. Brutus, Parnell's surly hunting dog, looked up from where he was gnawing a fence post into splinters. Intuitively, he recognized me as an impediment to his yearly opportunity op-portunity to kill something. He trotted over and gave me a smile that a chainsaw would have been proud of. I quickly slipped into the pack straps and staggered after Parnell. A broad field, covered with corn stubble and a light mist, loomed before us in the cold morning light. Parnell paused. "This is a secret spot," he said, . reverently. "I've hunted here since I was a kid." For a moment I thought he would break into a primordial hunting prayer. Unmoved, I pointed at several rusty 'NO HUNTING' signs on the fence. "Were those signs here then?" "Who do you think put all the bullet holes in them?" he retorted. Ignoring me, he knelt down and patted Brutus' Volkswagen-sized head. I have always been interested in man's relationship with his best friend. I find it fascinating that they serve us so intelligently and I wanted to capture that special moment between a man and his faithful dog. "Kill pheasants," Parnell whispered to Brutus. "Kill them all." Brutus began to salivate and his eyes glowed until he resembled something out of a Stephen King novel. Slobbering, he tore off into the mist in search of carnage. I got the feeling that anything with feathers would do. "Enough is enough," I said. I held the barb wire up so Parnell could slip through. He didn't return the favor and I tore my pants. "You have the dog, your gun.. .what do you need me for?" "All in good time," he said. "If I told you now, you would just make fun." "If it's just to carry this stupid pack," I whined. "I'm going to be mad at you." "Oooh, I'm really scared." He quickly grew serious. "But I promise that when I tell you, you'll be real interested." For a half hour, I plodded along behind him, trying to imagine what he needed me for on a dumb bird hunt. I was lost in thought when Brutus came bolting out of the mist. With a frightened whine, he ignored us and vanished in the direction of the truck. "Oh, no," Parnell moaned. He dropped his shotgun in the dirt and knocked me down yanking the pack from my shoulders. With frantic abandon, he tore it open and drew out a shovel. "Mark," he said, his voice went up two octaves with fright. "What did you call those holes you dug in Vietnam?" I shrugged "Foxholes?" He patted my head and whispered to me. "Dig foxholes, Mark. Dig them deep." At the far end of the field the mist parted-revealing a skirmish line of hunters heading in our direction. A pheasant fled toward us and they raised their guns. He was right. I was very interested in-terested when he told me. 4 4 Haley Jex wishes to announce the first birthday of her sister, Carly, on November 8. 1987.
