Show CBipillfi) ifi M Communication skills January :?(), li)8.r) - The Springville Herald Five fl-Gu snow The gold nuggets were only painted pebbles, but the spirit and enthusiasm of 251 scouts and leaders at the recent Hobble Creek District Klondike Derby was genuine. Intense In-tense competition was the order of the day as men and boys struggled for glory in the Friday night skit contest, con-test, the Saturday morning camp and leadership inspections, and, of course, the six grueling events of the Klondike Derby. Many of the troops attending took advantage of school being out Friday Fri-day to arrive early at Camp Jeremiah Johnson in Hobble Creek Canyon to put on a real show of winter 'camping skills. Campsites featured all sorts of winter survival ideas as well as the little personal touches that make a camp a home. Patrol flags, troop flags, axe yards, cooking tables, decorated entrys along with huge piles of firewood could be found in almost every campsite. The campfire program Friday night got off to a rousing start as "Super Chicken" from troop 130 put the torch to a towering pile of wooden pallets. Dean Rawlinson, District Scout Chairman, had a tough job judging 20 skits, but finally-awarded finally-awarded 1st place to Troop 142, 2nd place to Troop 70, and 3rd place to Troop 129. Official activities began Saturday morning with a crisp bugle call. The scouts kept busy cooking breakfast and getting ready for inspection until un-til 9:30 when they gather for flag ceremony. Troop 923 provided the color guard. Camp Director, Martin Palmer, complimented all the Nofionol Scout Jamboree The National Boy Scout Jamboree for all Scouts ages 12 through 17 will be held this coming July 17th to July 31st at Fort A.P.
