Show Page Four - The Springville Herald - January 13, 19H3 Community school classes to begin Community School Director Alan Curtis 489-8446 Springville area community school and recreation department classes are scheduled to begin on Tuesday, Jan. 18. Anyone is invited to enroll in the classes, according to Alan Curtis, Community School Director. Classes will be taught in almost anything one could desire, according to the schedule published in today's Springville Herald. Participants may register the first night of class work with the teacher of the class. Costs are varied, but very minimal. There are classes for children from six through teens, as well as for adults, including a Community Playhouse for people who would like to act, play music, build sets and make costumes; recreation basketball for all ages; winter recreation activities and classes for all ages; a ski program at Sundance; Sun-dance; track and field clinic; umpires um-pires clinic; and wrestling tournaments. tour-naments. A "Best Me" class will also be taught on ways to learn to know who you are and how to get the most out of yourself. Classes will be taught in aerobics, arts and crafts, bird study, cake decorating, calligraphy, computer, cooking, dance, doll making, flower making, fly tying, guitar, gymnastics, gym-nastics, hunter safety, interior design and decorating, jogging, juggling, knitting, math, bookkeeping and accounting, oil painting, photography. Others are racquetball, sewing, embroidery, Spanish, stain glass, type, welding, and word processing. BYU professor to give help on learning disabilities On Jan. 18, from 7 to 9 p.m., Dr. Betty Harrison will conduct a workshop of interest to parents and educators of learning disabled children at the Grant School Parent Resource Center. Many parents who attended the fall class by George Morris requested additional helps, and this class is an attempt to satisfy those needs. Dr. Harrison, who teaches in the educational psychology department at BYU and works with the training of special education teachers, will tell of five different areas where parents can help their learning disabled child. Tuesday, Jan. 25, 7-9 p.m. "Home Enrichment: Beyond the ABC's" one week class by Marsha Jacobson, popular lecturer and teacher, $2 fee. Tuesday, Feb. 1, 7:30-9 p.m. "Coping With Change: Families and the Mentally Retarded" one evening class by David Kleber and Mark Hite from Oakridge School, no charge. Tuesday, Feb. 8, 7:30-9 p.m. "Teaching Children Joy" taught by Karen Summer will include helping in setting up a parent cooperative pre-school. No fee. The Parent Resource Center is open from 3-5 on Mondays and Wednesdays and Tuesdays from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Grant Elementary School, 105 South 400 East. Mr. Shupe, the orchestra leader, and his son and other young musicians have put together a blue-grass blue-grass band which is. of such quality that they played for President Reagan when he was in the state recently. Thursday night ski program to get underway The Springville Community School and Recreation program is sponsoring the second year of Thursday night ski runs to Sundance every Thursday evening for the next six weeks starting this Thursday, Jan. 13 at 3:30 p.m. at the commuter parking at the freeway. This program is for skiers over 12 years of age. The cost for lessons, ski pass, lift tag, and transportation is $65. If a person wishes only to pay for the transportation, they may do so for $5 per trip. The transportation is a Nebo School District bus. The bus usually arrives back at the commuter com-muter parking around 10 p.m. For any questions call 489-8446 or 489-7472. There will be a special meeting on January 26th at , 7 .00 pm in the Little Theater at the Springville High Schoof. We need people who can act, play music, build sets and make costumes. CITY RECREATION BASKETBALL There will be an organizational meeting for a Mens over 30 Basketball League on Wednesday, January 19th at 7:00 pm in Room B-8 at the Springville High School. This league will feature the playing of 3 on 3 basketball at half court play. It will be a chance for older men to play some basketball without the running. There will be an organizational meeting for the Ladies Basketball League on Saturday, January 22nd at 9:00 am in the Middle School Gym. There will be an organizational meeting for the Girls Basketball League on Thursday, January 20th at 4:00 pm in the Middle School Gym CITY RECREATION BASEBALL Boys baseball organizational meeting will be held February 9th at 7:00 pm in Room B-8 at the Springville High School. Boys baseball sign-ups will take place on March 30th and 31st in the Springville High School Cafeteria from 6:00 to 9:00 pm on each of (he above dates. Boys baseball try-outs will be held on April 2nd. More details will be available at sign-ups. "BEST ME" - A WAY TO LEARN TO KNOW WHO YOU ARE, AND HOW TO GET THE MOST OUT OF YOURSELF This class is taught by Hede Huelsenbeck. The class will begin January 20th at 7:30 pm in Room C-4 at the Springville High School. The cost for this class will be $12.00. JOLLEY RANCH WINTER RECREATION ACTIVITIES AND CLASSES All the following classes are held at the Jolley Ranch, east of Kelley's Grove. SKIING, BEG., ALL AGES: 10:00 am and 1:00 pm February 5 and 12 Teachers will be Kevin and Susan Tipton. SPRINGVILLE CITY RECREATION THURSDAY SKI PROGRAM -1983 The Thursday Ski Program is set up for Jr. High and High School age students and any interested adults. No one under 12 years of age will be allowed to participate in this program unless they are accompanied by an adult. COST OF LESSONS, SKIS & TRANSPORTATION: $65.00 - Transportation, lessons & lift pass for six trips. $30.00 - Transportation only for all six trips. (Fee will be $5.00 per trip.) $42.00 - Skiis for this program may be rented at Sundance for all six lessons. Ski Days - January 13, 20, 27, 1983 February 3. 10, 17, 1983 TRACK AND FIELD CLINIC A Track and Field Clinic will be held every Saturday, beginning January 22nd for 8 weeks. All clinics will be on the Indoor Track at the Springville High School. SCHEDULE: 4th & 5th grades 1:00 - 2:00 pm Middle School 2:00 3:00 pm Jr. High School 3:00 - 4:00 pm Each Saturday session will cover one area of track and one area of field. Get the jump on spring sports now. Work with Coach Jim Flannagan, who has won an Idaho State Track Championship by working with athletes in the off season. UMPIRES CLINIC For all prospective umpires in the Little League Baseball & Softball Programs. There will be an Umpires Clinic held Mar. 22nd, 23rd and 24th in Room B-8 of the Springville High School at 6:00 pm. This clinic will help prepare those young men for the summer baseball program. All young men from Bronco age on up are encouraged to be in attendance. Stuart Hamilton and Joe Elmer will conduct the clinic.
