Our Sincere Thanks Sheila Grover Hunter George P. Hunter American Fork Buses halted Nebo School District officials used the usual Uth hour stampede tactics with the Lake Shore and Benjamin parents of kindergarten and first grade school children going to the Lake Shore school. Four days before school was scheduled to start the superintendent met with 13 parents on Friday, Aug. 19th and presented a plan to bus their littlest tots to Spanish Fork commencing this week. He wanted the "13" to endorse the proposal without any hesitation to avoid any further confrontation. con-frontation. Bravo to those parents for now swallowing the proposal hook-line and sinker and requesting a public meeting to involve all interested parents. Monday the 22nd was the latest, allowing a couple or three days for the parents to spread the word by jingling phones, personal contact, and church announcements on Sunday. Praises be! The parents did a smashing job, and at the Monday night meeting there were more than 100 people in attendance at-tendance that filled the auditorium to over-flow capacity. (I got an invitation in-vitation because I have been interested in the bizarre happenings in the school district and have been willing to get involved.) in-volved.) Also the superintendent spent Monday afternoon with three (3) mothers at the district office. Briefly this is what happened: 1. Superintendent Reidhead proceeded with a discussion on the proposal to bus children from the Lake Shore school. It seemed to be based on the condition that involves state small school support in the amount of $22-27,000. The enrollment there has grown to the point where this would not be availabe if they kept the full . mlrmk Coat Caravan A& $Uf , A selection of f'TfMiSlSLlH 1 I f i(iiMil ilL lM two-piece athletic KJSfSM IP hAKA Tvr jWfwMJUfeL f s?5rW. lv isnereTor mrm p pre-season nwnwmi .t- mr .mj -- ---tMllllm,l -. . 1.33 An appealing array of solid colors that will match the decor and fit your budget. However, the fact is it is relevant since children from Benjamin are bussed to Lake Shore who otherwise would have still been in the Benjamin school. 3. The superintendent dwelled at length on the fact that the district is experiencing a swelling population growth in the school room. Payson has a 430 unit housing development in the southeast section, Spanish Fork City has placed a moratorium on further annexation or developments, and 1800 new families are moving into Utah County each month. 4. He then pointed out that we nave a serious shortage of classrooms, a problem they are trying to solve with portable classroom units. Three more portables would be in use by January 1. (It takes six months to build a unit.) The hosrtage would also necessitate an accelerated building program. At this point one of the parents wanted to know if such a shortabe existed why were three school buildings done away with in the past three months in Spanish Fork (Others are doomed in Springville and Payson.) The response as I remembered it was, "This is irrelevant to the discussion here tonight. However, " he continued, "I will answer your question. The disposition of these buildings was not my decision. The board of education made that decision to do away with the schools even though I recommended they be retained. The school board is my boss, and I work for them." In the ensuing discussion Mr. Reidhead asked the three mothers he had met with Monday afternoon to make a response, but they did not feel so inclined. I assume it was intended they would respond in defense of his proposed action. A motion was made by a parent that they not accept the proposed busing program. It was seconded and passed unanimously to not accept ac-cept the district busing and to keep their children in the Lake Shore school. The parents of the Lake Shore-Benjamin area are to be complimented for the fine job they did in meeting this 11th hour battle of the busing binge the school district is on. It is a binge because a gentleman called me about a month ago and reported a busing problem. He bought a home nine years ago near an elementary school with the express thought in mind for his children to have school and home close together. He reported children are now being bused to the nearby school from the eastside of town, and his boy is picked up and bused on to another school. What hogwash! Holy smoke! I nearly went into orbit when Reidhead made the statement that the school board went against his wishes in doing away with the three schools this year in Spanish Fork. I attended at-tended a school board meeting the latter part of May and protested the destruction of the school buildings. The board told me the state fire marshall condemned them, and they wouldn't meet requirements for the handicapped. That is not true. Let's face it, who is doig what and why?
