Fish stocking Utah Wildlife Resources pilots and Fisheries personnel are hard at work this month as aerial fish stocking activities reach a peak. Many lakes in the Boulder Mountains of south-central south-central Utah have already received their yearly quotas of brook and rainbow trout fingerlings. Alpine lakes of the Uinta Mountains will soon be stocked as the last of winter's ice leaves the high country. A second series of aerial stocking flights Will come in August when cutthroat trout fingerlings, now being reared in hatcheries, reach the proper size for release. Aerial stocking is an integral part of the Division's Fisheries program. With out aircraft, air-craft, many of Utah's high mountain lakes could not be stocked. The old days when a handful of lakes were stocked each year by men on horseback hauling fish in milk cans are gone forever. Today, one man and an airplane can accomplish in a few days what once must have Come in and let me show you a FINE WATCH! One fish stocking tank, installed in-stalled in the Division's new Cessna 185 can carry from 3,000 to 100,000 fish, depending on the size of the fingerlings. A recent plant at Whitney Reservoir saw 4,000 brook trout fingerlings dropped in one run over the lake. The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources has been using aircraft to stock fish since 1956, over twenty years now. Veteran Division pilot Ralph Noble recalls those early days when he stocked fish from a tiny Piper Super Cub. "Back then," says Noble, "we didn't know much about the high lakes. We just took a load of fish up, dumped them in a likely looking lake and went fishing there the following year. If we caught fish, we kept stocking the lake." The alpine lake fisheries program has come a long way since then. Today, lakes stocked by the Division have been carefully inventoried in-ventoried by Fisheries biologists. Their findings determine the species and quantities of fish stocked in each lake. From the shoreline, an aerial plant is a spectacular spec-tacular sight. It seems hard to believe that a fish could survive such a tremendous impact on the water. But they make it. Only fingerling trout can be stocked by air. Their combination of light weight and air resistance allows them to slow down as they are released, so the hit the water at a reasonable velocity. Larger fish wouldn't make it. Actually, the survival rate of fish is surprisingly good if the pilo does his job. Pilot Noble describes the procedure: "A successful plant depends upon the proper conbination of airspeed and altitude. If I can make ih drop at an altitude of 100 feet over the water and an air speed of about 70 miles per hour, almost all the fish will make it." . Many of Utah's high mountain lakes are located in narrow canyons or along cliff ledges sometimes ranging up to 11,000 feet. Maneuvering a heavily loaded airplane at low speeds in these areas is tricky business. High winds and rough air, common in the high country, often make the flying extremely hazardous. But Division pilots Noble and Chuck Morris have over 60 years of flying experience between them and almost s- . , Tl W & !: W;Wv S St 'Si K-si w'W "; r' make the job look easy. Through the aerial stocking program, the Division of Wildlife Resources has established one of the finest alpine fisheries in the country. Many lakes which once may have been barren, or at best marginal fisheries, today provide quality fishing opportunities for the adventurous fisherman who takes to the high country. When you get right down to it, there's really not much time during the year when fishing is really red hot. First, you've got spawning to, put up with which takes 3 to 4 weeks, then the spring turn-over 7 to 15 days, the dog days 5 to 8 days, which shoots between bet-ween 95 to 150 days per year for you. So you somehow have to fit your fishing trip into the remaining 215 to 260 days. Then, other problems such as work, school, bowling, hunting, etc., are involved which cut further into your fishing time. And the weather doesn't help either it's either raining, snowing or blowing and sometimes it's just too darned hot. You might say that temperatures get to you, just about like they get to the fish. Over the last three years the Bell System's total energy consumption has been reduced 10 percent, even though the number of telephones they served went up 12 percent. A June release consisted of eleven mated pairs plus one extra female and a subsequent fall release included 32 birds. All were released at the head of Painter Basin near King's Peak. The purpose of the survey was to determine whether ,or not the transplant stock survived the past winter, and hopefully, to document possible production by the mated pairs released a year ago. The trip was successful on both counts.
