Show Cooking for men, by a man I don't know about you, but I get all riled up when I read the grocery ads especially the produce descriptions. "Golden Ripe Bananas, red-ripe watermelons, fresh lettuce, etc." And then you go to the store. The bananas are so green they could pass for avacados, the watermelon is green on the outside and even greener on the inside, and the avacados will be ready to use in about six months! The lettuce is browner than the lawns in a drought, and the green onions are picked so By Roger Honeyman young they haven't enough meat on them to make one good onion sandwich. Then there are those Mexican or California tomatoes that were picked when they were greener than grass and taste like a softened two by four. Woody, tasteless, etc. And the corn we get from California yuk. Well, it won't be long, Utah tomatoes will be on the market and they are unsurpassed, the corn is now coming on the stands and there's nothing like Utah sweeet corn, fresh picked and into the boiling water when it's only minutes from the stalk. We can't do much about the bananas and avocados except to buy them well in advance of use or need and then forget you have them and let them spoil at home instead of the store! A friend suggested that if you want to pick a ripe watermelon, find one that has a big yellow spot on its belly, where it lay on the ground long enough to turn yellow. This is a good indication that it is ripe. The ripe cantaloupes will have a distainct smell and the stem end will be softer than the rest of the melon. One thing that grows well in our aea is rhubarb. And if you don't know what to do with it . . . try this recipe for rhubarb pie. Now I know that HE doesn't like rhubarb pie, but this one is great. It's really rhubarb in a custard and it's not bitter, but rich and sweet. Rhubarb Pie Slightly beat two eggs, and add one cup of sugar, 2 tablespoons flour, and blend well. Add 1 cup rhubarb cut in small pieces (not cooked). Put in a pie crust, top with a lattice crust, bake at 400 degrees for IS minutes, then reduce the heat to 350 degrees for an additional 30 minutes. NOTE: You can freeze fresh rhubarb and use it in pies all winter.
