Brown, M.D. Director National Institute of Mental Health Rural Services Two key concepts of the nationwide program for community com-munity mental health centers are availability and accessibility.. accessibil-ity.. Too many of our citiezns . either have no mental health services of any kind available to them or else such services are not readily accessible. In rural areas, this is often a matter of geography the distance dis-tance of the consumer from the services is just too great. In urban areas the problem is one of scattered distribution of services. serv-ices. Accessibility is more than a matter of distance or distribution. distribu-tion. Mental Health services provided by centers should be psychologically accessible acceptable ac-ceptable in terms of people's willingness to use the facilities. Clinical-appearing facilities, intimidating in-timidating receptions, services obtainable only from 9 to 5 on week-days, and other such factors fac-tors are all barriers to accessibility. accessi-bility. The mental health centers are attacking these problems, as is evidenced by one of the success stories: the program mounted by Kentucky in its rural areas. The fact that this has been possible in areas which have had a minimum of psychiatric services available is a tribute to dedicated local citizen and government gov-ernment planning and participation partici-pation and to the imaginative leadership of professional organizations orga-nizations and the state mental health department. Each center in Kentucky operates op-erates an information, screening, screen-ing, and referral unit as the control center for all elements of service. This has made it possible to make full use of all kinds of resources available to the center.' Inpatient services, for example, exam-ple, are provided in small, nonprofit non-profit general hospitals, most of them with no previous experience experi-ence with mental patients Professional Pro-fessional people, such as general physicians, teachers, and clergymen, clergy-men, are encouraged to participate par-ticipate in the program and many do so. The accomplishments of the Kentucky program are especially espe-cially impressive in the light of major problems inherent in developing de-veloping mental health services in rural areas. Other states are also devoting imagination and ingenuity to solving these problems, prob-lems, however, and more and more rural services and coverage cover-age of rural areas is being reported. re-ported. We just need to do more and more of it! Basic stock window . styles include the following types: Double-hung a two-sash window with one above the other, moving up and down. Casement the sash is hinged at the side to swing out, and generally is operated by a rotary ro-tary opener. Others include: Gliding the window sash slides back and forth on a track. Awning sash is hinged at the top to open out and provide a shield from the rain. Hopper Hop-per similar to awning but is hinged at the bottom to open in, and is often used in basements. Fixed a sash that doesn't move for rooms where light but no ventilation ventila-tion is needed. All of these basic types can be used in bay, bow, box or picture windows.
