The leopard, once supposed to be a cross between the lion and panther, takes its name from two words Leo, meaning lion, and pardus, meaning panther. The beaver is not only an efficient, ef-ficient, but also fast engineer. It can cut down a willow tree five inches thick in three minutes. Division biologists are trying to determine whether the 1 bull to 4 cows ratio affects moose calf production. At the point, it appears ap-pears to have no adverse effect. Other big game species have wider ratios that 1:4 with no effect on production. Prior to the 1973 season, there were 38 bulls per 100 cows. This year the Ogden River unit, which included the Cache forest had a harvest of four bulls from the five permits issued for 80 percent success. The Bear River-Hole-in-the-Rock unit reported 45 bulls harvested by 98 hunters afield for 46 percent success. Two permit holders did not hunt. The first sanctioned moose hunt in Utah was held in 1958 when ten bull permits were issued. Seven hunters were successful. Since that time, Utah's moose herd has increased in-creased rapidly and is extending its range. It is reportedly one of the few herds in the world that is increasing in numbers and area. 1973 antelope harvest average Of the 265 Utahns who held antelope permits this year, 164 harvested animals for 69 percent hunter success. Approximately ten permit holders did not go afield this ' year. Assistant Game Management Chief Homer Stapley said this year's hunter success was average with the long term. The most popular area was the Daggett Unit where every hunter took an animal, he said. The Division of Wildlife Resources is issuing more antelope an-telope hunting permits now than ever, yet hunter success has been average or above for the last eight years. Better range conditions account ac-count for the steady success rate, Stapley explained.
