From the Herald Files 10 years ago Mrs. Harry Pennington, 208 S. 400 West, escaped serious injury Friday evening, January 11, when her car was struck by Denver and Rio Grande Western freight train near the old Springville Depot. Mrs. Pennington, Pen-nington, who lives near the depot, told police she did not see the train as she drove her car onto the tracks. Damages were estimated at about $500. Valerie Twelves, whose entry took first place honors in District 8 Make-It-Youfself-With-Wool competition in the county, was judged first place in the state in the junior division. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wendell Twelves of this city. Springville High School PTA is sponsoring an adult physical education class for men beginning Wednesday, January 23. The course will be held in the women's gym. It will continue for 14 weeks and will be under the supervision of Coach Karol Bills. Representing the general authorities of the LDS Church at sessions of the Kolob LDS Stake Conference to be held here Sunday will be Elder Ezra Taft Benson of the Council of the Twelve. Sessions .of the conference con-ference will be held Saturday and Sunday, January 19 and 20. President and Mrs. Howard Maycock and their two sons have returned after service in the Northern German LDS Mission. Welcome home services ser-vices will be held for them Sunday. They had their headquarters in Hamburg and served the entire area of Northern Nor-thern Germany. Governor George D. Clyde has officially proclaimed 1963 as the Centennial Year of Mining in Utah. He has issued a call to citizens across the state to participate in commemorative celebrations of mining over the past century. Miss Mary Lynn Huff of Springville is making good use of an excellent award she received in a recent "Do It Yourself With Wool" contest in Salt Lake City. For her first place entry she received the top prize in the contest, a new sewing machine. This little beauty is Carla Sue Peterson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Peterson of Springville. She was one year old Yesterday, Wednesday, January 24. Her grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Carl Peterson of this city and Mrs. Delia Ostlund of Bountiful. ' ft Sy ? x y j. f I k J Here is handsome Curtis Rowley, son of Mr. and Mrs. Winford S. Rowley of Springville. He will reach the ripe old age of one whole year on Tuesday, January 30th. Fisheries experts report Antelope Flat, Lucerne Valley and Sheep Creek Bay at Flaming Gorge are safe for ice fishing. Yuba Reservoir is also said to be safe for angling. Fishermen should, however, take note of current weather conditions before venturing out. Warm weather could melt ice enough to lessen its carrying capacity. |
