If the drip is continuoup the waste amounts to 25 gallons. If there is a steady trickle, up to 100 gallons of high quality water will drain into the sewer without being used beneficially. A dribbling toilet can waste 400 gallons of water every 24 hours. For consumers who have improved the quality of the water coming into their home by installing a water softener, it is even more important to conserve con-serve water, since water which has gone through a water softener sof-tener is of much higher quality than the typically hard water supplied by a municipality. Here are some suggestions from the Quality Water Education Committee for conserving water in the home: 1. Periodically inspect all faucets for leaks and drips, especially those not regularly used, such as in the basement or the yard. 2. Check toilets by placing laundry bluing in the tank. If color appears in the bowl, the tank is slowly leaking. If you have a water softener, toilet flush tanks should be by-passed by your softened water and supplied with ordinary water, so as to conserve higher quality soft water for cleaning, washing, and grooming purposes in the home. 3. Get correct information on the watering of lawns and plants; usually they need a lot less water than you think. Your State Agriculture Department or county agent can tell you how to save both your plants and your "water bills. If you have softened water, have your system plumbed to by-pass faucets in the yard since softened water should not be wasted on plants and lawns where ordinary water is preferable. Biologists compared the present system, in which deer age is determined by tooth eruption and wear, with a new technique whereby age is determined by the cementum annuli. The root crowns of deer teeth lay down new annuli much like trees grow annual rings. The cementum annuli process requires extraction of two incisors in-cisors from the deer. The teeth are sectioned, a portion stained, put on slides and placed under a microscope so biologists can count the annuli. Comparison of the two techniques showed the newer method is more efficient and more exact than the process that relies on tooth eruption and wear. A few eastern states use this procedure to determine the age of whitetail deer and several other states are testing it for use on mule deer. From age data collected, the Division can determine age structure, life expectancy, net reproduction, virtual populations and establish mortality rates for selected Utah deer herds.
