(Photograph by Bill Laskar, Sandia) Well, Wto Vou Know? fun, games and knowledge by MARTHA GLAUBER SHAPP, Editor, The New Book of Knowledge ' Would you like to learn bow to play the harmonica? The harmonica, 4tr mouth organ, or-gan, as it is often called, is played by blowing air into it directly from the mouth. The sound is made by the vibration of the reeds inside the instrument. instru-ment. With very little practice anyone can make some music and have fun with a harmonica. from the same hole ((D). Blow into hole 5 (E), and breathe out (F). Blow into hole 6 (G), and breathe out (A). Now breathe out from hole 7 (B), and finally blow into the same hole (C). You have just played a C scale. In each case you heard not only the melody but also a little harmony. Make sure you are using the right holes and breathing properly. Do not blow too hard. You can produce a pure tone with just the normal amount of air used in breathing. Play the scale up and down several sev-eral times. These instructions are for a standard 10-hole and 20-reed harmonica, tuned in C. With one hand at each end, fingers on top, thumbs underneath, raise the harmonica to your lips. All the holes should be open, and the numbers should be facing fac-ing you above the holes. There are 10 holes, but for a start you need only the four numbered 4, 5, 6, and 7. With these you can play a complete scale from C to C, a total of eight notes. First blow into hole 4; this produces C. Then breathe out 44556677 CDEFGABC There are many tunes that can be played with just these four notes. Among them are "Mary Had a Little Lamb," "Jingle Bells," "Home Sweet Home," and "Three Blind Mice." Once you have learned all the notes, there is no limit to what you can do with your harmonica.
