Food tor Thought By Mary Lee Most of the wise shoppers we know have a plan they fol low to keep the budget on the straight and narrow. The eight budget-savers listed here are typical. 1. It's a good habit to check your local newspapers for money-saving specials, then plan your menus around them. 2. Before you start to shop, plan menus completely, too. If you jot down items by departments depart-ments as they're stocked in the store you'll also save time and energy. 3. But take time to read labels and compare grades, sizes, brands. They can be the key to added savings. For example, ex-ample, use canned whole fruits for salads and cut up varieties for a baked dessert. 4. Consider ready-to-heat foods, too. Some cost less than those made at home. Canned soups are a case in point, and look at the time they sav, too. 5. Cook with evaporated or instant nonfat dry milk. Both supply the same important nutrients nu-trients as whole milk but at a big saving. Also they taste equally good in puddings, gravies, white sauces. 6. When you compare prices of meats and poultry remember remem-ber to discount the bones. A rule of thumb is four servings MEL SAYS: NOW IS THE TIME TO GET YOUR WATCH TUNED UP FOR SPRING! Driving course offered now at ProYO High Will 1970 be another banner year for the Grim Reaper, who last year claimed 308 lives in traffic accidents on the streets and highways of Utah? "The traffic accident problem prob-lem in the State could be reduced re-duced measurably," J. Earl Johnson, Safety Director for the Safety Council for Utah County reported today, ."if every driver would take it up on himself to learn the Defensive Defen-sive Driving techniques which have been proven to be an effective ef-fective means of reducing traffic traf-fic mishaps." The Defensive Driving Course, he pointed out, is intended in-tended for all drivers who wish to become better in the art of driving an automobile In today's to-day's traffic. . Drivers in Utah County will hav an opportunity to enroll in a Defensive Driving Course to be held in the Provo High School, Room Al-1, 1125 University Uni-versity Avenue. The course will start on Tuesday, February Febru-ary 3, at 7:00 p.m. and will continue on each Tuesday until the four 2-hour sessions have been completed. "One session of the eight hour course," he said, "is devoted de-voted to the art of Freeway Driving. With nearly half of January 1970 traffic death toll in the state occurring on the freeways, it would behoove drivers who frequently use this highway system to become better bet-ter trained in how to stay out of traffic mishaps." " Instructors for the course are qualified and are certified-by certified-by the National Safety Council. Coun-cil. Persons interested in enrolling enrol-ling may obtain further information infor-mation by contacting the Safety Safe-ty Council, 106 City and County Coun-ty Building, or by telephoning 373-5510 Extension 69. While advanced registrations are desired, de-sired, persons unable to do so, may register at the time of the first class. A registration fee is charged to cover the cost of materials used in the course. from a pound of boneless meat ; two servings from a pound with bone in it. 7. Think of bacon as an extender ex-tender as well as a breakfast dish. Add a few slices cooked and diced to scrambled eggs, potato salad, macaroni, other leftovers to give them more protein and flavor. 8. Be creative with leftovers, left-overs, canned foods or sale-priced sale-priced items. For instance, mix left-over vegetables and sea food with condensed vegetable soup and stewed tomatoes for a quick gumbo. Or add leftover ham or sausage to a can of beans in tomato sauce for a one-dish meal. Canned salmon stirred into left-over mashed potatoes with a bit of grated onion makes great "pancakes." Just pat into shape, brown, and serve. Canned ripe olives are fine for making leftovers seem elegant, ele-gant, too. Slice them in spaghetti, spa-ghetti, noodles, coleslaw, casseroles, cas-seroles, and salads. Need a quick dessert? Pour canned applesauce into a buttered but-tered pie plate. Sprinkle with macaroon crumbs and a dash of cinnamon. Bake until bub bly brown, and serve warm with a splash of cream. Not only is there an art in knowing a thing, but also a certain art in teaching it. Marcus Tullius Cicero Have you ever stopped to consider the impact of the printed word on our society? Nothing has contributed more to the advancement of mankind during the past few centuries, than has the printed word.
