(Sittr tff How did you figure this one, Brack? In a full-page advertisement adver-tisement published recently in the state press, you said in a glaring headline: "STATE COSTS HIT $551 PER MINUTE!" MIN-UTE!" Every second of the day and . night, the cost of State Government in Utah is $9.20 Th,is figures out to $551 per minute, or $79,400 per day." Obviously, Brack, you are aU tangled again in your arithmetic. arith-metic. Figured at the rate of $551 per minute, you would get a cost of state government for one year of $289,605,600 and that's more money than state government has cost in the last ten years! It cost you a lot of money to publicize that colossal error. Brack. Don't you think "gov--ernor" would have to be sharper sharp-er than that in "fiscal" affairs? (Paid political ad V. A. DAILY HERALD Friday, October 15, 1948 11 Convicted Check 'Artist' Brings His Family Into Jail; Sheriff Frantic APPLETON. Wis.. Oct 15, ttE Sheriff Lymafi B. Clark set out today to. solve the problem 01 what to do with two prisoners, a man and his wife, who brought two children along and set up housekeeping in Jail when they were sentenced for check forgery. "This is what I got elected for," Clark said. "It's the most perplexing problem I've ever faced." ' Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Murray of Flint, Mich., caused Clark's troubles when they brought their two children Patricia, 5 and Donald, 1 to share the year in jail they face for passing worthless worth-less checks. They made the Jail look like a nursery, with diapers hanging in the court yard, a doctor treating treat-ing Donald's sore throat. Matron Mary Derus heating milk, and little Patricia playing cops and robbers with the prisoners. Mrs. Murray said they forged the checks "because Patricia needs an operation for a tumor," and they had to raise $2,000. She and her husband were given the choice of a year in jail or a $1,000 fine. "We have no money, so we'll have to serve the jail term," the Murrays said when they moved in. Clark was a little unhappy about the situation. "We can't have "them In jail here,' he said. "It just wont work." "If they dont pay the fine, I'm going '.to ' ask the child welfare department to take charge ' of those kids," he added. . . , Mrs. Murray. 27. said tear fully she was "sorry everything had to be the way it is." She had no complaint about the treatment she and her family fam-ily have received in jail. I have never met nicer peo ple than I have in your jail," she told Clark. "Everybody is . so courteous, and the matron is sO nice to - the children." Standard Signs Agreement With Non-Strike Union BAKERSFIELD, Car..
