WEDNESDAY, JUNE 4, 1941 SECTION TWO CONDEMNATION SUITS SETTLED Directors of the Provo River Water Users' association okehed terms lor settlement of two law suits brought to condemn land on the site of the Deer Creek reservoir reser-voir at a meeting in Salt Lake City Monday. . .. . The directors, with the approval of the U. S. bureau of reclamation, reclama-tion, authorized payment of $23,-500 $23,-500 to ArvU A. Scott in settlement settle-ment of a Judgment of $29,000 awarded him in the district court for Wasatch county and from which the association had appealed appeal-ed to the supreme court. The appeal ap-peal is still pending. Mr. Scott will be permitted to mine fireclay from a 12-acre tract adjoining the reservoir, and shall have a share in the Decker canyon can-yon stream for irrigation. The board also okehed payment of $1261.57 and the exchange of eight acres and nine shares of water to David Wright, against whom a condemnation suit had been brought but which had not yet gone to Judgment. The action was taken by the board on recommendation of its executive committee. J. W. Gillman of Orem, president, presi-dent, presided at the meeting. Arthur Shepherd To Appear With Roth Quartet Here A new name added to the artists who will participate in the third annual music festival at Brighanv Young university is that of Arthur Shepherd, head of, the mu-eic mu-eic department at Western Reserve Re-serve university. He will appear as the pianist with the Roth Quartet in a rendition of his own recent piano quintet. Bom in Paris, Idaho, Mr. Shepherd Shep-herd has become a noted American Amer-ican composer whose works have been performed by leading organizations organ-izations in 'American and Europe. He has probably made "Utah music" known abroad more than any other living composer, through his compositions and conducting. In 1897-1908 Mr. Shepherd taught and conducted in Salt Lake City. He then became a member of the faculty of the New England Eng-land Conservatory of Music in Boston, and was assistant conductor conduc-tor of. the Cleveland Symphony orchestra for some years. . Besides the piano quintet which will be played by Mr. Shepherd and the Roth Quartet his compositions composi-tions include several overtures and orchestral suites, a Fantasia for pianoforte and orchestra choral pieces and sonatas. The festival will" have on' its program eight chamber music toncerts by The Roth Quartet. In twelve years of its organization the Quartet has come to be the criterion by which all strong quartets quar-tets are measured. It takes its place with the Kneisel and Fldn-zaley Fldn-zaley quartets as three names that will remain traditional in the annals an-nals of ensemble playing. Assisting Assist-ing the quarjet in its other quintet quin-tet performances will be Andor Poldes, Hungarian pianist, who is rated among the greatest international interna-tional artists. Also participating in the festival festi-val will be Stanley Chappie, well-known well-known in America for his lecture-recitals, lecture-recitals, and conductorship. At present assistant to Dr. Serge Kougsovitsky at the Boston Symphony Sym-phony orchestra. Mr. Chappie will take part in the special demonstration demon-stration course to be given during the summer session. Another highlight of the festival recitals wlil be a dramatic art reading by Lucile Calvert, dramatic dra-matic artist and reader, who will appear June 10. LAKE VIEW MBS. Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Scott are rejoicing over the arrival of a baby daughter, born Monday Jit the Sara Barnett home in Provo. All are doing splendidly.
