The process is a simplified method of making nitric acid, a gas which Is the building-block not only of explosives but of all nitrate fertilizers. Scientists know it as the Wisconsin process for nitrogen ni-trogen fixation. William G. Hendrickson, one of the originators of the process, predicts that it will cut prices of nitrate fertilizers to levels within the reach of farmers; who have been able to buy only small quan tities. University agriculturists estimate that Wisconsin farms alone should use 150,000 tons of nitrate fertilizer every year Idaho Athletes Killed in Smash WENDELL, Ida., Dec". 22 (U.R) Tragedy will mar tVtie Christmas holidays for at least two Idaho families following a wreck near here yesterday which claimed the lives of Ronald White, of Lewis-ton, Lewis-ton, and Walter C". Thomas, ' 18, members of the University of Idaho traveling basketball squad. Thompson's mortuary at Gooding Good-ing aid Thomas' .body was returned re-turned to Idaho Falls late last night for burial. Arrangements were k being made today to send White's body to Lcwiston. Slightly injured in the accident were George Weitz, 18, Caldwell, and Bob Fuller, 19, Nampa, both in St. Valentines hospital . here. Warren Shepherd. 24. St. Maries, also injured, was released yesterday. yester-day. Gooding County Sheriff Fred Craig said the team's station wagon, driven by Thomas, skidded skid-ded on a curve one mile south of here into the path of an oncoming on-coming semi-trailer, driven by Max Lloyd of Nampa. The truck was loaded with concrete pipe. Lloyd was not injured. The five were enroute from Rupert to Boise for a game with Boise Junior college, which was cancelled following the tragedy. Thomas was manager of the team, and the son of Frank H. Thomas of Idaho Falls. 90 -percent increase over the amount used nowr for greatest productivity. - . A hurdle facing all nitrogen re searchers, Hendrickson explained, is the extreme temperature, 4,200 degrees Fahrenheit which - must be reached before nitrogen will combine wth oxygen. Once, the two gases have been combined, they must be cooled amost in stantly to at least 2,800 degrees to make them stay together. Hendrickson and two other University of Wisconsin chemists solved this problem with ordinary pebbles. They heated air, which contains both nitrogen and oxy gen, by blowing It through a hot bed of pebbles and then through a gas-fired furnace. Then they chilled it by passing it through a second pebble bed. "In the process the nitric oxide is chilled to 2,800 degrees or low er in less than one-tenth of a second," Hendrickson said. Before the Wisconsin research ers hit upon their process, there were two methods generally used for producing nitric oxide. One was the electric-arc process, involving in-volving a prohibitive expenditure of electricity in most areas. The other was the Haber process, which uses ammonia and requires a large capital outlay. The new method could be used by small manufacturing units and "still operate to an economic ad- j vantage," according to Hendrick son. acienusis Deueve inai six plants using the Wisconsin process pro-cess could produce enough fertilizer fertil-izer to bring the state's farm output out-put up to maximum levels. Work on the process was begun in 1939 with the aim of simplifying simplify-ing production of war explosives. The fundamental theoretic concept con-cept was proposed first by F. G. Cottrell. Patent applications are held by the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation. Bereft M V ; Revolution In Panama Fails PANAMA CITY. The psychiatrists said Pound's personality, for many years abnormal, ab-normal, has undergone further distortion to the extent that he is now suffering from a paranoid state which renders him mentally unfit to advise properly with counsel or to participate intelligently intelli-gently and reasonably in his own defense. The psychiatrists, headed by ; hospital superintendent Winfred Overholser, said they had spent Considerable tima together and separately with Pound since he was placed under observation on Dec. 4.
