So he took to dropping in at the, butcher's butch-er's at odd hours, morning' and afternoon. As his charge account was paid regularly, the butcher kept on giving him food. One square meal a day is quite enough for the average dog that is oyer a year old. And Duke was much older than that. The veterinary who tended him during his brief illness described thus the cause of bis death: "Just plain overeating!" Siurd Kersting was a forester who lived on the bank of a wide river not far from Essen in the Ruhr district of Germany. His female fe-male crossbreed dog, Freia, used to go with him on his forestry rounds, every day, or years. She was devoted to him. A man who lived on the opposite side of the river took a fancy to Freia and offered Kersting a goodly good-ly sum of money for her. The dog was getting fairly well along in age; and Kersting happened to be in great need of extra cash, at the time. So he accepted the offer. Freia's new master ferried her across the broad and rapid stream to his own cottage. Kersting had warned him the crossbreed would try to get back to her old home and that she would better be kept chained up until she should have time to grow accustomed to her strange surroundings. sur-roundings. St on the chain, without slightest chance to escape. As time went on she appeared to be reasonably contented con-tented in her new quarters. Then she had a litter of pups seven of them in all, one for each year of her own life. Her owner figured she had no further need to oe chained. Love for the pups would keep her at home. fcJo he rigged up a kennel tor her and for her newLorn babies. By way of precaution he surrounded it witttaTTence, five feet high The next night, Freia picked up one ofher pups in her mouth and leaped easily the five-foot lence. Depositing the pup on the grass outside, she jumped back and letched another pup. And so on until all seven were wriggling on the ground outside the enclosure But this was only the first move in the wise crossbreed's campaign for escape. Again she picked up one of the pups. With it she swam the river, holding her head high to keep the Daby irom getting into the water She deposited the pup on Kerst- ing's doorstep and swam back for another. Thirteen times that night the dog swam and re-swam the broad and swift stream; until all seven puppies were safely cuddled down on the doorstep otrner old hornet lhen, worn out and panting and dienched, she sank down on the ttep anu gathered them to her. It was thus that Kersting found her and her babies when he came out of doors, early in the morning. rier love for him and her de sire to get back to his cottage and her clever way of combining motherly moth-erly care with affection lor him- seli all these appealed strongly to the forester. His monetary spell of poverty was over, the poverty winch had made him sell Freia. He was making mak-ing a fair living once more. So he rowed across the river, paid back the price he had received for the crossbreed, and allowed Freia to stay on with him as long as she lived.
